We all know what happened. I haven't had the ability to sit and type away about my feelings since my injury. I won't really waste much time on it. I like the players I collect(ed) and am undecided if I still will collect them. The Thornton trade was awful. I anticipated the Samsonov trade but it was still a bit of a heartbreaker when it actually happened. Now I am about to list the doubles I have of them both and I am seriously contemplating ditching it all and just focusing on set building instead of player collecting. I know this event has happened to others in the hobby and I am curiouis how y'all handled a situation similar to this. You know, a favorite player on your favorite team traded away. Team loyalties are a bit stronger than player loyalties. But, man, I really liked these players. Nice guys the both.

I feel for you man, your big 2 guys were both traded away in the same year and they have had such a long stay in Boston! I went thru this when Chelios was a Hawk and they traded him to Detroit.. I was a die hard player collector of his until then but after the trade to Det. it wasn't the same for me anymore and I stopped buying up all his singles. I did not sell any of it and I still have all my cards, auto'd memorabilia, GU Sticks, and Gamer jersey at home... I would say you should keep your collections and now focus on Bergeron.. On a side note do you happen to have a Joe Thornton 00-01 UD Legends Epic Signatures double for trade or sell? I need him for my set..
Best of luck to whatever you decide!

Haven't been QUITE in those shoes Oscar. My team allegiances have usually followed my player worship - i.e. I was a Leafs fan while favourite players like Gilmour and Vaive were there. I'm an Avs fan for as long as Sakic's there. Cart before the horse, some might say.

There was that awful couple of weeks in 97 when it looked like the Rangers might actually sign Sakic....and then the Avs ownership sold a small tv station they owned to free up cash to pay Sakic, and all was right with the world again.

If you were collecting those two because they were Bruins, then I think you now have a golden opportunity to backfill. Those Bruins era inserts will be coming available cheap.

I haven't had any of my favorite players traded besides Kozlov and Larionov, but those weren't on the same scale as your Thornton and Samsonov collections. I think, since you still like both players, just pick up the Bruins issues that you don't have yet and concentrate more on Bergeron.

It's weird... I'm a die hard Leaf fan but my favourite player is Lecavalier.

That will work out well when Lecavalier eventually gets traded or signs elsewhere... it really doesn't matter to me as long as he doesn't become a Sen I'm fine with it.

I suggest finding a player outside of your fav team to try and collect. You won't run into this problem. Or just become a Bruins collector in general (i.e a little from all players)

Different sport, but I was collecting a Dodgers top prospect. Did really well in the minor and then when he got brought up for a few games. This off season he got traded to Tampa Bay. Now I am moving them all. I think the right idea was mentioned...collect someone regardless of the team they are on, that way if they get traded it wont matter.
Good luck.

I went through a bit of the same thing. I started out collecting Roenick and Jeff O'Neill. This offseason, O'Neill got traded to the worst team possible for me (I hate the Leafs) and JR got relocated to LA (the Forsberg signing was a little bittersweet). So I moved on to some younger guys (Richards & Carter) that I would hope will be with the Flyers for a long, long time.
Even though Malhotra's bounced around from team to team a little bit, it's not important since I collect him because he's from my hometown.

Definitely on a smaller scale compared to your travails Oscar, but I'm sure that other collectors and I have gone through the same thing on a different scale.

Collect team cards, inserts, GU, Autos of players pictured in boston jerseys. If you really like Thorton, Samsonov i'd say still collect them a little.

I collect all pictured in Ottawa jerseys but one I would stay with even if traded if traded is Redden, hes just such a stand up guy

I wouldn't get rid of your PC like a gangrene leg. Just maybe retire it to a closet for the time being, Collect Boston stuff, if you dont wanna do the team as a whole then collect just the goalies or something

Happened to me in a big way, twice in a few weeks.
First Comrie went south in Edmonton, so I braced for it, and then he went to Philly...literally, there's about 2 teams that could have been worse, but then, godsend! he got sent to Phoenix.

I like his game, and that's why I collected his cards, he was my favourite player on my favourite team, but with player movement what it is these days (not too many Beliveau's n guys who just play for one or two teams in their careers) I just kept going.

I think you just have to analyze why you collected them.
Obviously they were your favourite Bruins, but now you have to decide, are they your favourite players too.

If they are, keep going, their game won't change too much, and you can add some new colour to your collections.

If you're bruins first and only, find someone new to dump the cash into, or, a better bet to avoid it in future (almost everyone is going to be strung across a number of teams these days, especially big name stars, free agency comes too young, and cap money will be limited) go with the set collecting.

I collect by players, so it isn't a huge deal, and I follow them wherever they end up. It was a pretty sweet deal this past season when my favorite player (Lindros) got traded to my favorite team (Leafs). Kind of the opposite of your situation. It just depends on whether you want to pollute your collection with some other colours. It's really dirty to have this happen to two top players in the same season, though.

Well, at the risk of it sounding like a joke, I am familiar with your predicament on a much larger scale.
You see, I collected Hartford Whalers, and the whole team got moved to Carolina  so I stopped collecting that franchise. Obviously I still like the team, just not enough to collect complete team sets.
I think you'll find your own preference, it just might take some time. Enjoy the journey! You may find a whole new way to collect ;)

Took a look at what I had in the PC in the way of Forsberg. So I chose a stack of cards of least interest to me and put 'em on the tradelist. *boom* a whole new group of cards to add to the personal collection.

Still kept a good number of his cards, but it felt good to trade some away and get some adds of other players. Still love watching him play, so doubt I will ever get rid of everything I have, but happy to have something new too.
