While at first glance this would appear to be a league discussion, I'm hoping it becomes a card discussion. It's entirely possible that Phaneuf's NHL career is at an end, and it's worth reflecting that there was a time when he was mentioned (positively) in the same sentences with Crosby and Ovechkin.

I seem to recall an article in the Hockey News where Brian Burke was asked if he could start a franchise with any of the three, he'd be sorely tempted to select Phaneuf. (He would later trade for him when he was in Toronto.)

But it never worked out. Phaneuf certainly had some good years, but I don't think the Hall of Fame will be calling.

So...how much did you spend on Phaneuf's cards back in 2005-06? Any really regrettable purchase out there? Personally, I love collecting defensemen, but I learned a painful lesson with Rusty Klesla a few years earlier and stayed away from Phaneuf.

It's too bad I watched him play live when he was with Calgary (his hayday if you will) and he dominated when he was on the ice. I have seen few players be able to do that. The entire feeling in the stadium changed when he was playing. Too bad!

In his first few seasons , he was a force. If you came through the middle with your head down you would pay a huge price. One of the great open ice hitters for sure. He had too much put on him in Toronto, I always liked him. just wasn't ready to be captain and all the pressure that goes with it. I think the past couple years he has had trouble with the speed of the game.
Cheers.
Dan.

He had a good career and made some decent $$ and got a decent girl.

I think he'll be fine.

I liked dion in Calgary, picked up the yg and quad diamond rookies, and a couple second year autos, with which I still have and will keep

I remember dion all the way to the WJC, “double dion” is what I called him, when he hit Ovechkin into another Russian and took them both out. Honestly loved when he came to Toronto, I own a jersey of his (not game worn or signed) with the “C” on it. I think the workload and responsibility got to him in Toronto and messed his career. He was one of my favorite leafs. Sad to see his career end like this. But it comes time sadly. dion. You will Always be one of my favorite leafs

If this is the end for Dion, he had a good career. Was good enough to make a good name for himself when starting out his career in Calgary, then was able to transfer that to have some longevity in this league, so that's good for him.

As a Leafs fan I just didn't see why he was the captain for out team and never really agreed with that based on his play, but I'm sure he liked the 'stability' of the role all those years.

Anyways, congrats Dion on living your dream all these years! I hope he enjoys retirement, if that's where he's headed.

He was great in his first year in Ottawa but you could clearly see the following season that he was going in his final NHL decline. It doesn't take much to fall off a cliff in the NHL as the competition is really high. Everyone is so freaking good, even the "grinders"

A lot of the class of 03 (RC class of 05/06) are slowing down. Gotta remember these guys are in their mid 30's and the pace of the game has changed over the past 5 years. I figure someone will probably take a flyer on Phaneuf (and Corey Perry); get him on a good value contract that he doesn't have to live up to and put him in a mentoring role.

Age catches up to us all - unless you're Patrice Bergeron.
