Does this affect the value of my card?

Hi,

I won a high-end 07-08 SPGU Fives Jersey (x/8) on eBay the other day. Very pleased to take that card of my wantlist :D!!

The GU card ought to be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity (card). Problem is that this card is not there. The item description of the auction did not mention that either. Upon inquiry, the seller informed me he got the GU card through a trade and claims he does not have the certificate card.

Since the card is quite rare, I would like to keep the GU card in my PC. Obviously I prefer to have that certificate card too. When selling/trading this GU card in the future, the other party might make a problem out of the missing certificate card.

Questions:
1) Does the lack of a certificate card affect the value of the GU card negatively?
2) If so, do you think a discount from the seller is fair/appropriate?
3) Is it worthwhile to contact Upper Deck and inquire whether or not they can replace a certificate card? Has anyone done that before in case of a missing certificate card?

Very curious for your input! Appreciate it!

Regards, Patrick

1) Personally, I am not a stickler for the COA on those situations, but yes, it would definitely affect the value negatively as it is no longer in the same state it was in when it left the manufacturer. It's kind of like if an Ultimate card was taken out of it's slab, or if the seal was broken on a Superlative card...sure it's the same card, but there is still something missing.

2) It doesn't hurt to ask for a discount, but based on the fact that it is so low-numbered, and you plan to keep it anyways, you don't have much of a bargaining position...especially if they offer a full refund if you return the card.

3) I doubt UD can certify something after it has left their posession. There is no way they can determine whether it is still in its original condition with the same memorabilia on it.

1. i don't think it'll affect the value of the card but it could deter a potential deal the same way you're not really digging the missing cert. at the moment.

2. no, i don't think the seller giving a discount is fair. no one has any motivation to keep the COA without the card. unfortunately, sometimes you just have to take your lumps. sort of like mail that goes missing; it's just part of the hobby.

3. it certainly couldn't hurt.

You can try, you may find that they know who has the certificate since they screwed up and inserted the COA card in packs without the actual GU card. I remember seeing a few people here pull the COA by itself, others pulled the GU card with no COA, and others pulled a GU card with the wrong COA.

I would post a picture of the card, or say what card it is. You might even get so lucky that someone on this forum has the COA. Weirder things have happened.

Thanks for the input so far! I did not know about that kind of mess-ups with COA cards .

The card is 07-08 SPGU Authentic Fabrics Fives: #AF5-PACR (3/8). If somebody has pulled the COA, PLMK!

Contact UD I spoke with them in the past about missing certificates for autographed items and was told that they will replace the certificate with a new one but they will need to place a new sticker on the item, the process will cost you but it is available.

That wouldn't apply in this case as this is a multi-patch card. I guess using the same logic though, they technically could replace the patch pieces and give a new COA...but that process clearly wouldn't be as simple as slapping on a new sticker.

Thanks!

I will contact Upper Deck. Can anybody LMK who to contact (name/e-mailaddress) within the Upper Deck organisation about a missing COA? I suppose they don't have a 'lost and found' department ;).

Regards, Patrick
