Here is the email chain between me and a local seller on Craigslist regarding a vintage set:

Me: I'm interested in the set you have on Craigslist. How much were you asking?

Seller: $850

Me: Sent link to ebay sales ranging from 200-400 depending on condition. I tell him I would be more in that range.

Seller: I am going to send it off to be graded and i have seen on average with good grading being around $1200- $1500+, so with that i am willing to take $800 without sending it off. I already have the application filed out so i am sending it this week. I have had it new in box and put them in binder and stored them in a safe since so all items are in like new condition. Thank you and have a good day.

Me: OK, I think that is a good idea. Are you interested in selling once it gets graded? If so, please keep me in mind. I would be willing to pay the avg. going rate on ebay for similar grades.

Seller: Hello in reference to the set i brought it to someone locally who grades and he gave me a price of $500. So with that being said my bottom price as of now is $400. Thanks once again for your time.

Am I just an awesome negotiator or should I stay away? I thought it was odd that he goes from telling me the items are being sent this week to basically cutting his selling price in half. Maybe I'm just paranoid but something seems a little off.

Craigslist is always a very hit or miss place when it comes to dealing with people. Best thing for you to do is go and see everything in person and decide what to do from there. Best of luck!

I am leaning towards you being an awesome negotiater.

You didn't give in to his high price and you basically gave him the fear of loss angle.

if you meet him, you may be able to get more of a discount if you point out that you saved him more money by not having him send it in.

Good luck

Also, if you meet up, be safe, have someone with you and meet in a public location. Too many horror stories from these sites.

Good luck with the purchase.

The end of the month is coming up, that's when a lot of people are selling on craigslist & kijiji to scrape up $ to cover rent/bills. He could just be a motivated seller especially if you're the only action he's had on the listing.
