eBay Authenticity Program for Trading Cards

On TOP of GLOBAL shipping fees, it could costly to mail a card to Canada IF we have to paid for said proof service!

CSG will be doing the authenticating and from all accounts, they're pretty slammed as it is. I wonder what the delay will be in these items getting to where they should...?

Ugh...I see this and I already have a headache because it reminds of the Global Shipping Program. I get that it supposedly makes things "easier" for the seller, but anything cross border will be a nightmare. 1 more set of hands = more opportunity for things to get "lost in the mail".

As a “sneaker head” I’ve had good experiences with this program on eBay. Yes it’s them wanting this slice of the pie too but it’s been free and fine, at least as a buyer. I’ve found the delay hasn’t been that much longer (same country) and even had a pair of sneakers I was purchasing found to be counterfeit — eBay refunded me right away. Again, as a buyer this is a positive for me.

Can someone pint me to specifics beyond ebay? Specific Instagram search/ user or Facebook groups or just marketplace and any other sites I could access. Obviously I’m a bit behind on the times.

Absolutely - there's a *lot* of Facebook Groups -

Here are some of the ones where I've had success:

Hobby House - French Canadian but mostly English posts
Les accros de cartes de hockey - French Canadian, almost all French posts, quite large
CloutsnChara Sports Cards Trading Group - CnC Group
NO DRAMA hockey card sales, randoms and trades - Great group IMO
Hockey Cards Buy/Sell/Trade/Breaks - Huge group, 24.5K members
Draft Day Marks, Letterman and Jumbo Logo Chasers - great for these sets if you're making them
Imperial Garden (KSEHD) Hockey Breaks - Store's Group
Breakaway Sports Cards - Buy, Sell, Trade & Break - Store's Group
Hobby Insider has a good group too

Lots, lot more too -

Key thing for Facebook trade/sale/buy is:

1. "Coined" Photos - i.e., dated photos of the card thats for sale, that includes your name and the date the photo is taken (and may include a coin for scale to ensure you're not buying/selling/trading a Jumbo YGs, for example)
2. Vouch Posts - where you obtain or provide the opportunity for other members of the group to "vouch" for you and provide positive feedback
3. PayPal Account (also EMT) - although some transactions are done with Goods & Services, almost all of mine have been via Friends & Family sales which makes point 2 above crucial.
4. Generally don't use the term "guns" in posts where you're looking to acquire young guns as it may invoke a Facebook response thinking that you're looking to sell weapons

I'm sure I've missed some things but that's my quick hits - hopefully that's useful.

eBay just announced that they have lowered the guarantee amount to $500 so any cards bought or sold for $500 now has to undergo this process.

People still sell on eBay?

2B by volume in 2021. Love em or hate em, they are easily the largest marketplace for sportscards, no one is even close.

Just a comment on this....

For work I'm in the payments space, and to me this is ALL about limiting their liability and losses on fraudulent cards and transactions. What most people don't understand is that when a fake or compromised card is sold, as a buyer you are protected, but that protection comes at a cost to the marketplace. So if you receive a raw, fake 79 Gretzky, no problem, you return it. If that seller has disappeared, closed their DDA, eBay and their payments partner Adyen are on the hook for the refund to the buyer.

I suspect they were losing tens of millions of dollars on bad transactions and this is primarily a way for them to validate authenticity before the refund, and settlement to the seller.

Been hearing that some cards are being damaged because they aren't being handled properly. ie a booklet card jammed into a semi rigid holder

Resurrecting this, it looks like they have lowered the threshold to items $250 or more, is that correct? I have never dealt with it before and was unaware I purchased something that was part of this free service (my fault I just didn't pay attention to the listing info). I think it added maybe 4-5 business days to the shipping at most, it comes packaged nicely in a cardboard outer box, and a magnetic flip top inner holder. Ok, seems a bit much in my opinion, and not something I would ever choose to pay for.

My questions are:

1. Does anyone feel there is added value keeping the magnetic holder with the item?
2. Is the item somehow "registered" with EBAY where if you sell it down the road, someone will know if you cut the "Void if Damaged" security seal and remove it from the slab sleeve? The item is in a graded BGS holder that I want to free from it's prison.
3. The "security seal" clearly says "After-market signatures and embedded relics are not authenticated." So, what is the point of going through this process on a jersey, patch, bat, etc memorabilia card? What exactly are they authenticating if they say they don't authenticate relics?

Input/opinions appreciated.

I have not bought anything that came through this service yet, so take my options in with a grain of salt....

1. None, whatsoever. Speaking only for myself: The eBay authentication holder would add a dime to my valuation of a card.

2. I don't believe so. I don't think there's any kind of registry.

3. They're authenticating that the card is legit (i.e. NOT a counterfeit). If UD / Topps / Panini were using forged signatures, or bogus material - eBay's authenticator isn't checking for that.... simply that it was a real UD card.

I've gone through this a few times as a buyer. I still haven't decided if I like it. My few purchases have been autographed cards that are issued by Topps/Upper Deck, so I know they're valid. They're not vintage cards that might be altered or something someone had signed personally, so there was very little worry that what I was buying was not authentic. I'm also not a fan of an extra person (or more) handling the cards. They obviously take it out of the original holder and place it in their own, so they're definitely being handled raw.

The magnetic holders are a waste for me. I don't want them and unfortunately they go right in the trash. Same thing with the new sleeve that it comes in.

I can see liking the service as a seller. If the buyer ever has any issues than I imagine the authentication process solves many arguments, but again, I no experience on that end.

from my experience it only takes about a day, because they are just confirming authenticity not slabbing/grading which takes more time
