Why would any team trade for the rights to a player just before they reach free agency. Apparently the Flyers have offered Lupul for Boumeester's rights.

What advantahe would this give them, obviously Boumeester has an idea of what he might be worth to another team and if he doesn't then shouldn't he just wait it out?

Teams that trade for players rights basically are just hoping that the player they trade for will sign with them before July 1st. It is a huge risk but if it works out it is worth it. For example Lupul for Bouwmeester. Only thing is if it doesn't work out like last year with Montreal and Sundin you lose out on whatever you gave up. Yes you can argue why not just wait for July 1st to sign Bouwmeester, but then you have tons of other teams fighting for him.

He may think he has an accurate range down but you have a distinct advantage to bring him in and sell him on your team and program. Plus once the bidding starts with a couple of teams his price may end up jumping again so you have the opportunity to get in at a potentially lower price.

Correct me if am wrong but isn't there also a way to structure contingencies into the trade? For example - Lupul for the rights contingent on Bouwmeester signing. Meaning that if he does not sign with the Flyers then there is no trade or a trade of lesser value (draft pick maybe). I thought those trades were out there as well.

You could also look at it like you would be freeing up salary. If you can rid yourself of a contract you have more to spend in free agency. So they may lose Lupul but they still have that cash to spend on another free agent.

BINGO

Exactly Trev.

Not only do they get to sign J-BO, they would now shed Lupol's $4.25M Salary Cap Hit.

Plus the Flyers are already in BIG salary cap trouble.

They have $54.926M already pledged on only 21 players + a goalie.

Assuming the players vote to keep the cap at last years numbers - that means the Flyers have less than $2M to spend on 2 players + a back-up netminder.

I would say that they are in salary cap he$$ at the moment.

And if the recession deepens as it likely will league revenues could go down which would lower the salary cap which would hurt teams close to the current limit the most.

Actually (and someone can correct me if I am wrong) I listened to an interview with Kenny Holland and the interviewer brought up the same idea:

Holland said that while it was true that in theory the Cap could be affected by the economy and the value of currency...... BUT;

He explained that the players association has the right to reset the Salary Cap to last years figure as part of the last collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players. If the league chooses to lower the Cap - the players association has to vote on wether to accept it or envoke this provision.

He really could not see any reason why the players would be willing to lower the cap - if it comes to them for a decision.

Explain to me the move of when the Rangers traded Mike Richter to the Oilers, then Mike Richter resigned with the Rangers a couple days later. That was a big WTF to me when that happened.

The Flyers did this when they gave Nashville the #23 overall pick from the Forsberg deal back to Nashville for the rights to Timonen and Hartnell. Nashivlle wasn't gonna resign them, and the Flyers didn't wanna compete with other teams during free agency.

Where is this article??? Imagine if we got a stud like Boumeester on the blueline!! finally a steller move on Holmgrens part!!! I hope it happens!!! WOW exciting!!! hey see if we can throw in Briere as well

Question...if the Flyers obtain the rights to negotiate with Bouwmeester, do they then have the ability to turn it around and attempt to trade it elsewhere? I realize it's a bit risky to do so and possibly dumb.

ie. Homer finds out Mike Gillis is interested in Bouwmeester, and he's interested in...say...Willie Mitchell. So he trades for J-Bo's rights. Does he then have the right to try to trade those rights to Vancouver for Willie Mitchell, or is that against some NHL rule?

Hmm, good question and I have no idea! If I were going to guess though I would say they would have something in place where you can't do that.

1. If Homer trades Lupul (which I dont think it will happen), for JBos rights, they have until the July 1st deadline to get JBo to sign a deal. So in all reality they only have 3 days to get the deal done if they do it during the draft.

2. The Flyers are in deep crap with the salary cap. We saved 2 mil on signing Emery and dumping Biron. Knuble's 3.8 cap hit is gone and I doubt he will take a hometown discount for 2 million. We need 2 3rd liners and at least 2 Dmen. James vanRiemsdyk will not make the team out of camp.

Fictional lines at the moment not in any order:
Richards/Briere/Gagne
Carter/Hartnell/ Giroux
Carcillo/ somebody/Lupul if he is not traded
Asham/Powe/Cote

Timonen-Coburn
Carle-Parent
Sbisa-Jones
Dman-Dman (Alberts if he does not sign

Emery
Backup

DXFlyers - just so you are aware, the figures I stated do not include any of the UFA's or RFA's.

That is why I am pretty sure the move suggested would be an effort to free up cap space. I can't even think of a way for the Flyers to be able to sign J-BO and stay in Cap contention.

I agree. We will probably find out Friday

Why would you say Knuble wouldn't take a discount? He's older, he has a family, and since he's not gonna play another 5+ years, I doubt he'd wanna uproot his family from where they've been for 4 years to move them for 1-2 years, then move them again when he retires.

That would be because Knuble will be moving back to Grand Rapids Michigan when he retires. He was born here - just is building/redoing a new home and starteed a new business with some friendws that he is an active participant in.

If Hossa jumps the Wings - I would not be suprised one bit if Detroit does not court Knuble. And he would entertain a hometown discount to play with the Wings.

It's simple really and stuff like this happened alot in the old CBA.

Not sure if it was for any UFA or specific UFA's. But anyhow, if you lost a player to UFA, you got a draft pick. If you resign a player you obviously got nothing. So Edmonton basically got a crappy draft pick for free and the Rangers got something from the Oilers(guessing a crappier pick) and they still kept there goalie.

Very interesting. So the players unilaterally can push up the % of league revenues they receive.. Sounds weird. Wonder how many seasons this fantasy could go on.
