Last week we had 3 people bring fake Roy RC's into the store. They even had the black dot in the top border but the pic is blurred with lines (unlike the crist clear original). If you look at it under magnifying glass you can see it was a simple ink dot added.

If looking at it quick - you may get duped. Compare it to a real one - not that close.

The back seals the deal - it is not the same blue as the blue bleeds compared to original cards from that year. Mix the card into a group of cards from that year and it will stand out like a sore thumb. 100% full-prove way of checking.

The one guy had a Gretzky as well. The Gretzky's were easier because they were missing the dust marks.

BEWARE FOLKS - THESE CARDS ARE OUT THERE.

do they know they are fakes? Are they unsuspecting collectors who acquired them unknowingly? Or did they seem to be people who knew exactly what they had, and tried to pull one over on you?

Scott:
Did these guys know they were fake or did they get ripped? Where did they say they got them from?

Ron

PS did you get the order for the one screwdowns

This stuff scares me, I would really like to start collecting vintage almost exclusively but I'm scared of getting ripped off.

Ron - Screw downs ordered and should be in Tuesday.

The one guy I think did not know any better - but it's the same old story - "pulled it from a pack when I was a kid" - which we know is BS since the fakes were printed in the 90's. So knowing or not - they were not telling the truth about where they got it.

One was a cracker who had the Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Bourque, Hall, Orr and Roy plus a bunch of 90's stuff... I was almost temped to buy the Yzerman and Bourque because I don't have a decent copy of those fakes for the staff to use as guides - but then again I have so many real Yzermans and Bourques - why bother.....

One other guy came in when Kaitlyn was there - told her he knew me (so he knows my schedule) and that I would be interested in the Roy RC. I think he wanted to take advantage of her because he watched her sell a couple boxes of Spx before he approached her - so he knew she had atleast $300 in the till. He made the mistake of telling her that he could get more which luckily was a red flag for her so when she told him she was going to call me - he said he would bring it in later in the week when he knew I would be there and left before she could call me.... Needless to say, no one has shown up.

For the life of me, I have no idea why she does not remember what kind of car people drive or the fact each car has an unique licence plate.... I keep telling her to record licence plate numbers of shady customers - someday she may remember....

Funny how 3 Roys in one week. We see Gretzky's and Lemieux's all the time but not as many Roys and never Bourques and Yzermans...

Generally easy to tell. Education is key. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true - it likely is.

These guys are getting better though - they prey on your deceitful side... They let you think you are in the know and they are not... So when you think you can score a great card for nothing... Wrong - they know more than you think.

BUYER BEWARE!

That's some good sleuthing. Maybe just for everyone here you could post a couple of side by sides of the fakes you use to educate your employees. I think this would be a great help. I know I pride myself on knowing what is what but I had to learn the hard way (luckily only once).

i just got a gretzky rc, and i actually was hoping to get a fake to go with it. sounds wierd i guess, but o well, it would be nice to put in the binder if i ever get the rest of the set. if you guys have one, or know where to get one for cheap let me know.
