I think if the hobby goes back to more set collecting, more card collecting and less about autos and memorabilia hits, that would be by far the best thing for the hobby.

This year there will be multiple sets like that commemorating the Kings Cup win that I'll be deliriously chasing. When I think about Canadian collectors chasing OPC red this year, I feel like the hobby can make a come back. :).

What's your favorite set of cards you've built that's non-auto'ed, non-memorabilia'ed? Hopefully the set is non-all RCs and not crazy rare like /10 or something...

My favorite set I've built was my 05-06 Trilogy, Frozen In Time set. Over a hundred cards, I peeled them all, haha.

i'm having a blast with the young guns sets... I was able to pick up the 05/06 set for a damn good deal and I am very close to this years set. I feel more excited finishing a set like young guns or the molson panini banners then I do pulling an auto or Game used these days, unless of course its something real real nice

Once finished, it will be the 03-04 Black Diamond green set. Already completed , would have to be the SP Notables/Essentials set for the last 4/5 years.

When I finish, the 99-00 UD Exclusives set is going to be pretty sweet I think :)

beautiful set, huge & very limited production. I secretly keep an eye on your progress when you post about it... not much of a secret now.

I haven't completed it yet but I'm slowly working on the 02-03 Topps Heritage chrome /667. A member completed one recently but I forget the username. Mine isn't high priority but is the only non mem insert set I'm working on.

My fave middle skool set is Pinnacle's Nifty Fifty. Easy set to make by today's standards...so I want to make it only by opening old pinnacle boxes, lol.

Some day I'd like to go back and pick up all of the singles of UD BD Run For The Cup.

For me it's a toss up between the 96/97 Ultra gold medallion and the Select Certified Red. Both completed without the help of the internet I may add back in the day. Very expensive considering a few years later you could find most of them on ebay for a song. Glad I moved them early on.

98-99 UD Lord Stanley's Heroes. The set that fueled my addiction, if you will. Growing up, it was all cards that looked like Proset. A few years later, I made a bet with my mom that if I got an A on a test, she would buy me a pack of cards. I pulled a Selanne, discovered eBay and made local trades, and the rest is history.

I just completed the 08-09 O-Pee-Chee gold set.It was a real challenge to do the update set when the odds of the gold cards in the first series was 1 in 4 packs to the update where they were less than 1 per box.But I would say that it is a set that there likely only a handful or so that have completed it.But it was fun to do and it certainly tested ones patience.

I haven't finished it yet, but this one will look nice once completed, 96-97 Donruss Elite Painted Warriors, missing 4 (commons too, haha!) Here's a taste of what they look like.

Great thread

My current fav old set but it will hopefully be displaced sometime soon by the completed 97-98 Pinnacle Certified Gold Teams /300 (down to 4 cards).

first set i completed was 02/03 Topps Chrome. entire base set, rookies, patrick roy insert set, and the opc update cards. was a pretty nice set, and built it from mostly retail packs and hobby boxes, only a few buys off ebay.

second set was 06/07 Fleer Ultra gold variation. all the non redemption (ie. didnt include the redemption rookies) cards, including the base rookies.

then, i built the ITG Franchises base set, through all sets- Canadian, East, West, and Update. gotta say, that was prolly my favorite set to look at in its entirety in a binder.

since you said non-auto set, i wont talk about the UD Legendary AKA set i put together over 2-3 years...

My favorite was the old school 96-97, and 98-99 pinnacle team pinnacle sets. I also enjoyed putting together the 1998-99 Bowmans Best set. Very hard to track down some of those SP rookies! But it was really fun.

Well I didn't QUITE finish it, but I had all the level 2's, 3's and 4's of the 05-06 Ice rookie set, I always knew even from day one I would never get the level 1's, but it felt pretty damn good to get 162/168 cards!

Wow, looking at your limited wantlist for that set, that's quite impressive, hope to see it when it's all done! Have you tried shopping in the Beckett Marketplace? I see about a half dozen of the cards you're looking for over there, most for just a few bucks.
