Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the month of February 2021. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 16 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. Unfortunately due to the back log in the mail, there were a few cards I was hoping to have included in this months thread but alas they will have to wait for March's show. So without further adieu, lets get to it!
10. Mixed Bag of 05-06 Inserts
At number 10 we have quite a random collection of inserts. These were all thrown into a larger deal I completed during the month of February, but interesting none the less.
Included were two hot prospects parallels, Zetterberg /100 and McCabe /10. Along with them was a Kozlov MVP gold parallel /100 and a Kevin Klein Gold Ultimate rookie /25. And last but not least a SP Authentic limited parallel of Mr. Hockey himself /100.
#9. 2005-06 UD Be A Player J.P. Dumont Autographs Gold Parallel 6/10
This card found its way to me in the same deal mentioned earlier. While many collectors seem to distance themselves from sticker autographs, I like the design of these cards and I don't mind picking them up as a cheaper option to hard signed cards, especially the very limited parallels!
#8. 2005-06 UD The Cup RPA Olesz 41/199 and Dallman 14/199
Next we have two four and three colour patches from the revered 2005-06 the cup set. While they may be long forgotten in the minds of NHL fans, both to my surprise, enjoyed quite lengthy playing careers which include recent game time. Dallman, upon ending his NHL career in 2007-08 with the Kings organization, continued playing in Russia. He had two stints with Astana Barys and one with St. Petersburgh SKA, before retiring after the 2018-19 season. Olesz on the other hand, departed the NHL after the 2013-14 campaign with the New Jersey Devils, and moved back and forth between the Czech and Swiss leagues. He currently plays with Olomouc HC of the Czech league.
#7. 2005-06 Series 2 UD Game Patch Eric Lindros (5/15)
This next card comes from a fellow forum member who was a pleasure to work with, and we struck a deal shortly after my inquiry about it. What makes this copy in particularly special is the three colour Leafs patch, the silver coming from the trim they wore from the early to mid-2000s. To this point I had once seen copies of this card with solid white patches, so to find a 3-colour version was truly unexpected!
#6. 2005-06 UD The Cup RPA Gold Parallels Leneveu /30, Artyukhin /76, Danis /75, Dallman /38, Nordgren /44, Nastiuk /55 and Foy /83
I may have gone on a bit of a binge in buying these Gold parallels during the past month but I don't regret it in the slightest. My goal is to one day own a copy of the Crosby /87, but in the mean time these will do. Plenty of great three and four colour patches, but as time goes on, these are becoming increasingly scarce.
#5. 2005-06 UD Ultimate Achievements Jeff O'Neill (2/5)
This is the first card from this set that I have owned, and what a great first card to have. Jeff O'Neill is quite an entertaining listen, especially on TSN's Overdrive radio show, and this is my first autograph of his. I'm glad to add his autograph to my collection, as he doesn't seem to have signed much post-career based on what I see available online.
#4. 2005-06 UD HG Glossy Steve Yzerman #66 (3/10)
I have been searching for this card since I began collecting the set. If worthpoint is to be believed, an Yzerman HG hasn't been offered for sale since 2015! You can see the challenges associated with collecting a large set which is limited to only 10 copies. Lucky for me, this card was offered at auction and I wasn't about to let it slip away. I'm happy to cross this one off the list. I now sit at 225/487 or 45% of the set complete.
Now onto the top 3!
#3. 2005-06 UD Parkhurst Facsimile Autograph Set (1-700), only missing #587 Crosby Season Highlights
I had the opportunity to purchase a complete set (minus one card) of 2005-06 Parkhurst facsimile autographed parallel cards. A total of 700 cards, each numbered out of 100.
For those unfamiliar with the set, Parkhurst released a parallel set numbered to 100 for every single card featured in the 700 card set. This serial number was found on the reverse of the card, while the front featured a facsimile autograph on the front. Oddly enough, there were a few cards produced that didn't feature an autograph print, but rather the player's name written in cursive writing. The base parallels included active superstars such as Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman and Brodeur and only one retired player, #500 Gordie Howe. The latter 200 cards featured smaller subsets including captains, team logos, season highlights and of course the 70 rookie cards. Key rookies include Getzlaf, Perry, Lundqvist, Ovechkin and Crosby. To differentiate between the regular base subsets, the parallels used a red border vs. the base beige border. Many of these cards could be easily mistaken for the regular base cards, and likely have been in the past, making purchasing a 99.9% complete set a truly rare find.
The only card that was not included in this purchase was the #587 Crosby Season Highlights card /100, so if anyone has it I would be interested in purchasing it! Picture is below for reference.
I've included a side by side comparison of the Ovechkin RC, base and parallel so you can see the differences.
Base BGS 10 RC I no longer own:
Parallel RC 11/100:
Below are all the Crosby and Ovechkins featured in the set, minus the missing #587. The spaces in the proceeding page scans are for these cards which have been moved to toploaders or one-touch holders. I own 10 of the Ovechkin and Crosby cards from the set, my favorite of which commemorates "the goal" Ovechkin scored against Phoenix on January 16, 2006. An iconic pose for one of, if not greatest, goal scorer of all-time.

#2. 2005-06 UD Game Patch Series 2 Wayne Gretzky 3-colour patch (11/15)
This is a true white whale pick up, I have searched every possible facebook group, forum and ebay tag for this card. Up until a year or so ago, I had never even seen a picture of this card. This was by far the biggest series 2 patch left for me to find so I am ecstatic to add this one to the collection. A 3-colour Kings patch of the Great One, it doesn't get much better than that! Now if only I could find his series 1 brother, to this day, I have never seen a listing for one.
And #1...
#1. 2005-06 The Cup Rookie Black Parallel Alexander Steen (1/1)
This is my second Black Parallel rookie from the 05-06, joining my Patrick Eaves I picked up years ago. I was pleasantly surprised I won it to be honest, given that it was a Leafs player, with die-hard Swedish player collectors and from the coveted first cup set. Perhaps things just went in my favor on auction day but I am very pleased to now own this card. I will have to add the Gold and Regular cup rookies to complete the rainbow one day, but by far the toughest card of the three now sits in my collection.
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what April will bring, comments/feedback are welcome. Have a great weekend everyone!
