That has to put a damper on the early estimates of his RC selling for $25,000. Almost makes it not worth the gamble, which is a crazy statement in itself.

Updated the OP with other sales. Interesting that no Larkins have sold yet. He seems to have the most that are for sale...but no buyers willing to pay what sellers are asking.

thats not that big of a surprise for me. people are asking really big money for his RC and frankly he's just not worth it. I really don't see him being as big of an impact player as people expect him to be.
and...
i know for myself i'm not a fan of how much he thinks of EVERY goal he scores... (take it easy kid, you are on a team after all), i'd like to see him be a little more humble and a little more of a team type player. but that is just me.

This is just my opinion, but I believe the lower sales may be contributed to the design of this years rookie set.
I got to see a McDavid ARP in person today, and to me it is not very impressive looking.
Would I want one in my PC...yes absolutely, but not at this price.

When a /99 RC of the reigning Calder winner who plays in a hockey crazy market with plenty of collectors sells for less than what some of these nit wits are charging for one tin, makes you wonder what's truly happening in the "hobby".

As for McDavid, the 01/99 & 97/99 might surpass the first one, maybe, but the rest I can't see selling for that price. I would bet they can be had for $6000 or less within 2 months.

Back in 02-03 when high-end RAP /99 from UD Premier started, it was huge to pay a 4-digits amount for one of the big names like Spezza, Zetterberg or Nash.

In hindsight, sure. There's always going to be busts now and again. Most of the time we don't find out who they'll be until years after folks pay $1k for a guy like Tlusty. As for losing some lustre I think that comes with having The Cup around for ten years and just becoming complacent with high-end in general.

If The Cup was the only true high-end product then the secondary market sales would be much better. However, what's the point of paying crazy amounts of money for a Cup ARP when you can get other ARPs in 5-6 products? THAT'S where the issue lies. The Cup is no longer unique in any way

That's an awfully steep drop off though. Look at those sales for guys like Domi, Ehlers, Bennett and Panarin. None of them even came close to $1K. When the reigning rookie of the year, who is showing no signs of regressing whatsoever, commands that little amount of money, it makes you wonder why you would even bust a tin. Conceivably, you could bust a tin, pull an ARP /99 and still not cover the cost of the tin.

Agreed, Premier/Ultimate/Exquisite/etc ARPs really takes the uniqueness away from the Cup ARP.

One way they could differentiated is to use Game Used jerseys for the /99 players in the Cup.

McD Cup ARP #/99 3clr are transacting north of US$16k and under US$20k at this moment for ungraded copies (12/16/2016). Not worth it in my book. Not a fan of the design and disappointed it is not GU from rookie year. Also, there are a ton of McD choices with all the retro insert RC designs.

McD hypetrain is well and alive. A lot of the money chasing McD are from other sports.

It is crazy that McD is selling higher than Crosby.
