Flames fire coach Bill Peters

Officially Peters resigned - so that likely means that they reached a settlement on his contract - it does look like the NHL takes over on the investigation going forward...

I think, regardless of what what’s said ten years ago, while working for another organization, to come out and wreck a guys career ten years later, to be basically forced to resign because of th public backlash, dang, I would hate to be held accountable to some of the things I’ve said and done in the past. And I can almost guarantee that every coach in the nhl has said something to a player that upset or insulted them racist or not, I just hope instead of this being just the flames coach every team has to look into players and coaches past and if there are found to be something not kosher the team let’s them go, you just fry one coach, you gotta fry them all

There's more to this I think - I believe they were looking to fire him at some point with the underperformance this year - and this provided the team an out. Regardless, once the NHL got involved, there was likely no way Peters was ever going behind the bench again - their decision. The Flames direct involvement ends here with the settlement - as the team was forwarding their information to the league

He abused a position of power to undertake racist comments and not feel ramifications from them at the time. That is a lot different then saying stupid things as a teenager. I can tell you right now as the President of an indigenous focused engineering firm, if I had corroborated evidence that someone in my organization in a similar capacity, even with a different firm, spoke in racist terms, I would utilize every legal avenue available to me to have them out the door. Not only are they bad for business, I simply don't want to associate with people like that, nor expose my organization or my clients to people like that.

Just my opinion.

I'm sorry but this is a bad take. I don't care when it was in anyone's past. If someone uses a racist slur towards a lower level employee, co-worker or a customer, they deserve to be fired. Even worse when you're in a power position as Peters was. Let's not forget that there are also allegations of physical assault towards players. This guy is a piece of sh*t, plain and simple. He should never be allowed to have any coaching position in hockey again.

And let's be clear. ONE person ruined Bill Peters' career and that person is Bill Peters.

He should not have waited 10 years, in 2009 a players career was not dependant on a coach, when it happened he should have stood up and said something, he would have been heard, or at least go through the teams HR department and go through the right channels, this crap about trying people in the public forum is disgraceful, I wouldn’t like that if it were me.

You're doubling down by shaming the victim now? You're really not doing yourself any favors with these posts.

That’s not shaming the so called victim, from what I heard the racial slur was not directly made to him, it was about his choice in music, correct me if I’m wrong. Why on earth would you wait 10 years, and then do so publicly, I’m mean come on, every team/organization has an HR department for this reason, and I’m sure there are a million other details that we’ll never now about this situation

Well Said Cory. This is the best and most logical comment & opinion I have heard all week, and I fully agree with you.

So you're saying that it isn't that bad if he used the "N" word as long as he didn't direct it to Aliu? I'm sorry but this is still a terrible take. The use of that word in any circumstance is grounds for dismissal in my opinion.

And how do you know that Aliu didn't speak to anyone about this when it happened? Even if he didn't, he has every right to tell his story no matter how much time has passed. He didn't make anything up. The facts have been corroborated.

Let me ask you this. What should have happened to Peters if Aliu had gone directly to HR?

Is it ok to play music that uses racial slurs in a public area like a dressing room? I would be offended, but that’s neither here nor there, and yeah he should have taken it to the team in 2009, it is completely unacceptable then as it is now, that wasn’t 1980, it was 2009, organizations were aware of and sensitive to that sort of speech, and an investigation should have taken place then and the problem taken care of then, not 10 years later. If a flames player stands up I 10 years and says the coach said or did something that took place this year, they need to stand up now not later.

Another quick question. If your daughter were to come to you later in life and tell you she had been assaulted by someone 10 years earlier, would your response be "Sorry but you should have brought this up to me 10 years ago"?

Different scenarios and if someone assaults my daughters they already know to tell me or an authority figure ASAP! And yeah I am offended by all music that uses that word, it’s unacceptable to say it’s unacceptable to sing about, why wouldn’t it be, otherwise you have a double standard. And yeah, I’m a bit put out that you made this personal by mentioning my daughters, I’m out. I wasn’t saying I’m on Peters side, just don’t think he should have waited 10 years. If someone assaults my daughters and I hear about 60 years later, I’m out for blood, as is every father!

We all would be. So my question is why is this any different? This happened to HIM, not to you. It's none of our business why he waited this long to speak out. The fact is this happened and Peters is a racist. End of story.

it is possible that he was worried that by doing so at that time would hinder any chance he had at another shot in the NHL? The NHL GM's/coaches have the appearance of being a tight knit, "old boys" club in a lot of ways.

And a lot has changed in the last 10 years.
