Flames fire Ward, hire Darryl Sutter as new head coach

The Calgary Flames fired head coach Geoff Ward and hired former Flames bench boss Darryl Sutter as his replacement, the team announced following Thursday's 7-3 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Ward replaced former Calgary bench boss Bill Peters in November 2019 on an interim basis. The Flames went 24-15-3 under Ward last season before making him permanent head coach in September.

However, Calgary has struggled to carry over that momentum to this season. The team has won three of its last nine games while ranking 23rd overall with 2.71 goals for per game.

Sutter served as Flames head coach from 2002-2006, leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004. He last coached in the NHL with Los Angeles in 2016-17 and won a pair of Cups with the Kings.

Ward is the second head coach to be fired this season. The Montreal Canadiens dismissed Claude Julien on Feb. 24.
 
It will be interesting to see how Sloth from The Goonies does this time around with them.
 
Thank you. Needed to be done. Ward was in over his head as a coach. Simply not a head coach. Boring system, played slow and his player usage was awful.

I’m excited for Sutter. Cautiously optimistic that he can get a lot more out of this group. This team should be better and I think he’ll get it out of them. The core has 32 games to show they can get it done with a real coach And if not it’ll be one interesting off season for the flames.

I totally agree. This will be interesting. Sutter is almost as fun as Torts to watch when he gets fired up. It just doesn't happen as often.
