Looking to start piecing together a collection of current player rookies cards... Young Guns are looking a little too pricey but what about the Fleer Ultra rookie cards?

I always collects Fleer Ultra in the 90's growing up and they seem to have a following in other sports but whats up with hockey?

Crosby/Ovie year and forward.... are the all the rookies SP'd every year?

I recall Crosby and Ovechkin were short printed (were tough to pull) and they dont seem to have appreciated in value at anywhere near the pace of their Young Guns.

I think Fleer Ultra was stopped back in 2009 or 2010 or so.

What about collecting O-Pee-Chee Rookies?

Outside of the highly collectible rookies (young guns, ice premieres, SP Authentic future watch, The Cup RPA)...many of the rookie cards don't appreciate all that much.

Great alternative IMO. Matthews and McDavid have very nice Fleer Ultra rookies #'d to 699

The final 21 cards of the 2005-06 set are SSPs, falling 1 per box. So they are harder to pull than Young Guns. The question is - how much Ultra was produced? Because it sure felt like there was more of it out there than Series 1.

Anyway, just because it's scarcer doesn't mean anything. There are plenty of Crosby RCs numbered to 999 or less that aren't worth as much as the YG.

Back to the original consideration, if you do hunt Ultra RCs, you may want to consider chasing the SSPs only. Higher player quality. The regular RCs might kill you in shipping costs for very little bang.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I was mostly looking to start to put together a RC collection of Crosby, Ovie, Malkin, Price, Stamkos, Kane, Toews, etc.... that sort of generation of future HOF players.

And my recollection from opening lots of Ultra and Upper Deck back in 2005-06 that the availability of both products was fairly similar. Ultra was slightly cheaper but yea Crosby and Ovie were SSP (couldn't remember exactly) but I opened a lot of Ultra and didn't pull either of them.

And I suppose even if the supply is less the demand for YG's is crazy (hence the price difference).

I would get the Ovi and Crosby now during the off season. They are only going up in the future. YGs of those players have priced many collectors out, so these are becoming a nice lower cost alternative. The rest can be had really cheap as was noted before.

Great point. Shipping costs most definitely has to be taken into consideration. I got smoked doing the 05-06 sp authentic rcs. I was buying the common non auto cards for a dollar and shipping was averaging $4 at the time. I easily spent over a hundred dollars in shipping while paying less the $40 for the cards themselves.
