So I've been searching almost daily on eBay...I've seen Silva, Rampage, Bisping, Royce Gracie...

...yet no Lyoto Machida autos. Not even one of those ugly Topps redemption cards with his name on it if the card wasn't live. Did these even make it out in the product?

I've held off acquiring any Machida cards till I know whether the autos exist because I'm not really interested in acquiring mat relics and inserts until I know I can add the autos to it too.

The original autograph checklist dropped down from 50 or so fighters to around 37, other notable names that didn't end up having autos: Chuck Lidell, Brock Lesnar, Rich Franklin, Frank Mir, Matt Hughes, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Dan Henderson, and even Dana White. There are more than that not in the final product, hell even two of the ring girls that were supposed to have autographs didn't get in.

Bait-and-switch seems to be a new strategy for Topps :|

This actually kind of explains why the product was so delayed.. Topps couldn't get the fighters to agree to a deal and put it off as long as they could before saying "go ahead and release it anyway". Unfortunate, I wanted autos of a lot of the guys who got cut from the checklist.

Yeah, I was really looking forward to seeing some nice Rich Franklin stuff. Oh well, maybe in Round two if that happens?

Interesting...where'd you hear this news Inferno?

From the back of the hobby box I busted yesterday, the only autographs seeded were:

Group A (1:118)
R. Couture
R. Jackson
G. St. Pierre
A. Silva

Group B (1:188)
B. Penn
F. Griffin

Group C (1:72)
B. Buffer (Announcer)
H. Dean (Referee)
R. Gracie
R. Leah (Ring Girl)

Group D (1:15)
K. Florian
H. Herring
M. Bisping
B. Vera
C. Leben
D. Sanchez
R. Huerta
G. Gonzaga
C. Kongo
K. Parisyan
C. Guida
M. Gumburyan
E. Herman
T. Silva
R. Clementi

Group E (1:70)
M. Serra
T. Alves
S. Sherk

Group F (1:94)
P. Kelly
M. Danzig

Group G (1:20)
C. Dollaway
B. Saunders
M. Riddle
J. Burkman
S. Stout
W. Gouveia
T. Credeur

There you have it, 37 total fighters made into the final product. If you have seen the original checklist it's quite a bit shorter.

As for my theory about the product being delayed, that was just a theory I haven't seen any proof.

Man, I don't wish any of those Group G'ers on anyone, nor most of Group C. That said, there are some solid names on the auto list.

It's a shame they yanked guys like Liddell off the list. You put some names like Nogueira, Lesnar, and Liddell in Groups B and F, and things look a lot more interesting :).

I don't think they're missing anyone more than they are saving some for their next release. Why put all of your eggs in one basket? Round 2 will have three headliners and then second tier guys who didn't make Round 1. There has to be a selling point, right?

I was surprised that there wasn't a Dana White in the inaugural set.

UD doesn't save their Gretzky autographs for another release :P

I am confident there will be another UFC product out next year, it doesn't necessarily have to have different autographs in it just a new theme. This year was debut fights, maybe next year will be each guy's best fight or just the fighters themselves.

I think if they wanted the first release of a new product to be a success, they'd put as many eggs into that basket as they could.

Yeah, they put him in everything and stick the labels on upside down.

This is the first release of a standalone UFC set. This was likely more a test of the market than anything. 16 packs in a box and 6 hits tells me that there isn't a whole ton of this stuff out there. Series one is a guaranteed win, so fans of other fighters will be clamouring for series 2.

I'm also willing to bet that the UFC people had a lot to say about this set too.

The UFC's popular enough right now that if they only had autographs of Kalib Starnes, Travis Lutter and Cutman Duran in the set, they'd still sell it out. I think Ryan's theory of saving fighters for Series 2 is valid. Most of the "cut" fighters had fights in the 3 months between the announcement and the fight, so it's not that surprising.
