Funny patch mistake

I could see how a Sam Gagner patch made it onto a Simon Gagne card but pretty funny nonetheless.

I don't think Sam Gagner even wore a jersey with that patch. I could be wrong, but it looks pre-2007 to me.

If this were the case and he didn't, it would highlight one major issue - I believe Gagner's 2008-09 Limited Logos cards would have been certified on the back for having had game used material.

I do believe that the 08-09 Gagner Limited Logos in that card had the correct era of jersey though. I've had at least one pass through my hands and don't recall anything weird about the patch.

It's likelier that this one probably came off a Ryan Smyth jersey.

He is wearing a pre-RBK Edge jersey in that draft photo (no NHL shield in the collar). His rookie year (2007-08) was the first year of the new RBK Edge jerseys. Therefor he wore that jersey at the draft but could not have worn it in a game because the NHL had switched jersey platforms beginning with his rookie season.

Yea my mistake. I just wanted to show that he did end up wearing one with that patch so it was possible he could have in a game. I didn't know they had just switched jerseys that year. After searching Oilers jersey history instead of looking for Sam Gagner (much harder to find older pictures of him in a game) they only used Home/Away Reebok Edge Jerseys. As for the shoulder patches it looks like they used an anniversary patch in 08-09 but can't find any shoulder patches in 07-08.

There is no longer any torso striping (excluding the contrasting colour piping that runs along the outside of the front torso section like many of new Edge designs). The only striping on the jersey are on the sleeve and on the inside half of the elbow."

You can see a shoulder patch on him in this but isn't the one in the Gagne LL

What's weird though is this is the 05/50 Gagne Limited Logo made just before the 06/50 using a philly patch so how does that happen?

I guess it is possible that they intended to use an older oilers player in that set and a patch got mixed up.

The Simon Gagne with the Oilers patch is either:

- A UD patch placement error

- A very poor attempt at patch faking
