Goaltender Jake Paterson will be between the pipes on Saturday as Canada plays its second game of the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championship against the Czech Republic in Malmo, Sweden.

Canadian head coach Brent Sutter has elected to stay with Paterson, who made 22 saves in Canada's tournament-opening 7-2 victory over Germany.

"He played pretty good (Thursday)," said Sutter after practice on Friday. "He didn't have a lot of work, but after that first goal he made some key saves for us. I'm not a believer in rotating goalies in this tournament. You want to go with someone who's riding the hot hand."

2-1 for the Czech Republic after forty minutes, Plutnar is almost certainly going to get thrown out of the game for shoving an official to the ice at the end of the period while trying to go after McDavid.

4-3 now for the Czechs. They have played a fantastic game here.

And moments later Hudon ties it up.

This game has been awesome!

Great game by the Czechs. A few things I think Canada needs to do:
1.) Put Fucale in there, Patterson was only ok
2.) Create more scoring (move someone else up with Drouin and Mantha)
3.) Finish, skate more!!!

Please don't see this as an American bashing Canada - that is not my point at all as I would really like to see Canada do well in this tournament (a Silver would be just fine with me...hehe). That being said, I noticed the following:

1. This is a bad TEAM. Great players, all going 100mph, all with blinders on and as the game got later and later it seemed to get worse and worse. A lot of individuals trying to take over without leaning on teammates.

2. Paterson was fighting the puck the whole game. I have no idea what the other options look like in net but he was real bad.

3. An extension of #1 but a lot of undisciplined hockey and stupid penalties going on. Selfish hockey all over the rink.

4. Defense - this is as bad as I have seen a defensive corp for Canada play in years. Constantly caught out of position, both dmen moving up ice at the same time or falling back at the same time - no rhythm at all and the first passes were terrible.

5. Coaching - I really thought Sutter was going to bring everything together but he seemed half lost at times as well. I can understand why you bench McDavid after a couple dumb penalties but if you are going to look to him to do something special in the shootout you may as well get him on the ice at least once. Kid hadn't moved or touched a puck in a couple hours.

Anyway - it's only one game.
It's still really early and a lot of this stuff can be worked out over the next two games before they hit the Quarters. Two wins and they can still be the #1 seed in the pool but, as stupid as this sounds, there must be some relief that four of the five pool teams advance instead of just three as in years past or the unthinkable could have been a possibility.

So, what you are saying is, is that they are basically the 'Edmonton Oilers' of the WJHC.

Can't really argue with that.

Dishing is like fishing... Shoot the puck. They would get mid slot at the hash marks and dish for the pretty play.

Only one game but they better learn as this goes on or it will be an early plain ride home.

BTW, Dylan jinxed them during the shoot out... Boo to avalanche94 LOL
