So 2016 ended up being a pretty great year for me personally. I changed jobs, learned a ton, grew in my profession, went to the Masters, played golf at Bay Hill in June, made my second hole in one on December 11, 2016, and played Torrey Pines South over Christmas. One of the most satisfying years I can remember having.

Hobby wise, 2016 might have been the complete opposite: very, very, painfully slow. I was going to post a top 10, but (not so quickly) realized that I only added 9, yes thats right 9, cards to my collection. I had to include duplicates in that count to even get to 9, so I didn't even bother.

Then, on January 7 a true whale surfaced on eBay. Including this copy, I have only seen 4 copies of this card, three buried deep inside collections. In the past I have made some absolutely ridiculous trade offers, approaching $1000 in cash value, but each unsuccessful. I was able to reach a deal with the seller, but the auction could not be cancelled. I would have to bid and try to win. I put in a mega giant insane snipe but was very uncertain that it would be enough. A few months back the prismatic version sold for over $900 US, so I had no idea what this one might go for, but I was guessing it would be large.

The auction ended at 8:30 Central on Tuesday January 10. I was trying to finish few things up at work and not watch the auction or rethink my bid. As 8:30 approached my mind wandered to the auction and whether I would win. I gave in and checked the auction with 2 minutes to go.

Longest.

Two.

Minutes.

EVER.

Obviously I won. If I didn't there would be a giant sale thread in the BST with some of the best Lindros cards you have seen instead, haha. I am happy to say that I won for less than the deal that I made with seller but was unable to close and way less than my snipe that looks outrageous in hindsight. I want to take a second to say that the seller was a great. When we couldn't get the deal done, they apologized and hoped that I was able to win the card for less than we had agreed to. Total class.

If I don't add another card to the collection this year, I don't care. I am sitting here looking at the new Die Cut and the Prismatic side by side, and my collection feels pretty darn close to complete. Cards like this just aren't made any more.

Well thanks for the long read!

Great story, super happy for you! Awesome looking card, and so nice to hear about the experience you had with the seller.

Huge congrats and thanks for sharing!

I know the feeling of watching that auction tick down to the final seconds... Nerve racking. However the pressure of watching a whale you've been chasing for years count down would be 100x worse.

Congrats on the win

Awesome story about landing a huge whale! And so nice to hear a story about a class act ebay seller - for all the horror stories I've heard, I've had over 99.9% positive dealings there.

The 97 BAP rainbow does indeed look great together. I can only imagine how extra great it is being the Lindros SSSSP compared to 1 per pack Odelein that I have haha

beauty lindros, those are still monster cards to land, a good omen to start the 2017 collecting year eh
