Goalie Pads

Hey Guys,

Since the league was talking about reducing their size, I got curious and wanted to see if I could spot for myself how much bigger they have grown in the past 20 years.


1. Martian Brodeur 1993 - The pads come up just above his knee.

2. Martian Brodeur 2002 - Not a huge change in size, if any.

3. Martian Brodeur 2012 - It looks like they have grown by an inch or two.

4. Roberto Luongo 1999 - Pads are just above the knee

5. Roberto Luongo 2002 - They look a few inches longer

6. Roberto Luongo - Ok no questioning these pads are much longer.

7. Roberto vs Brodeur - Luongos are significantly longer

I didn't mean to pick on Luongo. When you Google huge pads, he tends to come up a lot :laugh:.

Martys pads have always been smaller than other goaltenders.
much more accommodating for his hybrid standup/butterfly style.
boy luongos pads are huge!

Funny that you use 5, 7 and 9 as examples of the pre-lockout size pads and then in #6 use a post lockout pic of Luongo showing longer pads... but guess what, the pads post lockout (blocker and glove too) were reduced in size. They are much narrower now than they were before the lockout and blockers are significantly smaller. Chest protecters were restricted in size as well.

Also pretty sure that #3 is from a year or 2 ago. Brodeur recently started using sherwood pads. There you can see how tiny the blocker is relative to the size they were post lock out

You are right, that is a typo, it should read 2013.
