Besides the players from the beginning of the league, whose cards are the most valuable? Gretzky, Howe, Orr? Somebody else? I want to invest but am not sure which player I should go after.

Those are three people of whom companies have MASS PRODUCED their autographs. I'm willing to bet that UD has a treasure trove of stickers of all three (with Leaf having their own stash of Gordie Howe via ITG). In this case, I wouldn't "invest" in any of them. Buy an attractive card for your PC, but certainly don't invest.

That goes for anyone who has ever signed a trading card.

Maurice Richard has a handful of certified autographs and you can still pick them up for a reasonable price. I see good upside there. He's signed WAY less than the others.

I wouldn't 'invest' in autographs. If you want to 'invest', look at rookies, etc.

For autos, look for visually aesthetic cards that you enjoy for your PC now and others may really enjoy later. Those are the cards that will increase in value even if more get produced.

Just my opinion.

I think the reason for the relatively low value is that a lot of Maurice Richard's autos are on cards that aren't necessarily the best aesthetically looking cards, and a lot of his autos are of a few cards with high print runs, whereas certain rarer Gretzky, Orr and Howe autos are lower print runs and on much nicer looking cards and should maintain a better value than Rocket's stuff.

If I was going to invest I would go with players that died before the trading card boom (e.g. Jacques Plante, Terry Sawchuk) or rarely sign (e.g. George Armstrong). Like the others have said, I don't think hockey autographs are a great investment in general.
