I was at the money pit today and the owner had 2 gretzky rc end on him by ebay, He was told that no gretzky rc can be auctioned off without being graded because of all the fake cards that are out there. Is there any truth to this?

If this was posed before I am sorry but I missed that thread

Your dealer is smoking something funny... an ungraded Gretzky RC can be sold on ebay without any problem. As long as there is a good scan of the key points that point to its authenticity, you should be fine. Maybe there was some reason to suspect his auctions?

Yes, there are a lot of fake ones (not to mention a number of other key cards) on there and ebay seems to have no problem letting those on...

There are a couple that can't be sold on ebay due to problems with counterfeits. OPC Gretzky RC ungraded and Bobby Orr RC ungraded are two.

I personally wouldn't touch an ungraded Roy or Lemieux either unless I knew where it was coming from...

Yep I felt the rath of the ROY OPC Fake. good thing I only lost $45.

we had 8 gretzkys pulled AFTER they were sold.....major pi$$ off.....we also had another item pulled because it was "fake" acording to ebay....well another ebay member had one in his store and still does to this day....we asked ebay about this because it's unfair....never recived a responce....

You can understand why .Guess with the Orr and Gretzky,we all have to get them graded

I know a few people locally that have had their auctions for ungraded copies of Gretzky RCs and Michael Jordan RCs removed at one time or another. With all the fakes out there, eBay should be applauded for taking positive steps towards maintaining the integrity of their auctions.

I did not know Sadie smoked...... You learn something knew everyday.

As mentioned by a number of people and dealers already - they pull Gretzky RC's if they are not graded all the time. It's unfortunate because it's one of the easier fakes to detect.

We don't waste our time listing them on there anymore.

We have too many in the showcase. Anyone need one? Priced $200 to $1300 (yes, over BV).

I have to agree. eBay has enough of a bad reputation for scams being pulled, no matter what type of item it is. They need to do what they can to uphold the confidence of both buyers and sellers alike.

I think right now there's a Gretzky RC on ebay with a starting bid of $43,000 . I'm not sure if it's graded. It doesn't really show a picture of the card. The picture shows a binder with the entire set.

Beat me to it, the Jordan is another one that has to be graded, or you must say its a reprint in the auction. I dont see a problem with it, as it helps add some legitimacy to it. Someone can put a picture of a real one up, and then send you a fake one. the old bait and switch. If you buy a graded one, its a little harder to do.
