Hi all

Slowly working my way through scanning all of my player collections, trying to update my virtual checklist as I go. Last night I completed my Steve Thomas scanning but ended up with an issue - 96/97 Pinnacle

The checklist shows the following variations ;

96/97 Pinnacle #53
96/97 Pinnacle Foil #53
96/97 Pinnacle Rink Collection #53
96/97 Pinnacle Premium Stock #53
96/97 Pinnacle Artists Proof #53

Okay, I'm happy with that ........ but then which three do I have ?

I think the first scan is the regular base card - the second card being the foil version ........ but what's the third. It doesn't say artists proof, it doesn't appear to be particularly premium stock and doesn't look foiled like the other rink collections I've seen

Any ideas ?

In order it looks like you have:

Premium Stock (thicker than base, silver foil)

Foil

Base

You are missing:

Artist's proof (has ARTIST PROOF in a half circle on front of card)

Rink Collection (Dufex front with Rink Collection logo on back)

Gotta love those 90s parallels and variations!

K, here's all five Sakics in a single scan:

Starting at the first and proceeding along: Hobby Base, Retail Base (foil board), Premium Stock (refractory highlight foil), Rink Collection (Dufex! Bring that back!), and finally Artist's Proof (big shiny letters!).

Thanks for the guidance - means my Stumpy collection has grown by +1

Thanks so much for the scans - if only you had a Sakic website with all of your scans on .......... numpties such as me could use it as a reference to see what parallels they have :-)

That assumes that I have everything scanned. I've got a fair chunk done...but nowhere near all. Like NONE of the slabbed...

As a side note, there are also 5 versions of 96/97 Summit. Base, Foil (shiny silver, I think), Premium Stock (shiny rainbow), AP, and I forget the 5th, but it's akin to the Rink Collection.

Ice - it's not like Rink Collection in that it used Dufex, but it had a funky design on rainbow foil stock

Here's four of the five. Not featured is the plain as dirt base card. In order: Retail, Premium Stock, Ice, and AP.

I want to try to make a member contributed photobucket of a catalog of examples like Quincy's but non-player specific with HI blessings, but haven't recieved any comment from Bruce on the inquiry. I want to try to get all of the years starting with 1990 to the previous current collecting year (09-10 collection year, 10-11 when the new 11-12 product comes out and so on).

I am embarrassed to say that I have been collecting Hockey for 20 years and I am still surprised with the variations within old sets. Player collections, like Quincy's Sakics, are a treasure for player collectors and master set builders. These are also treasures for collectors who are curious if the cards that they have are special or not. This wuld be helpful also for collectors who can't quite remember the year a card style was. Does everyone know the difference between UD Series 1 in 2000 and 2001? Without looking it up?
(Example- 02-03 Topps Heritage base set vs Test set...the lighter wood grain is the test set and skip numbered with a total of 10-cards. I have the Yzerman, and I thought it was a variation but only knew of the Test set by the wrapper but not what it looked like, until someone on here descibed it to me as such. It wasn't in Beckett, my "go to guide" until a few years ago. Variations in quality between prints is not new to Topps-see examples of vintage cards-and I thought it was a quality issue. If I had a visual reference...;))

I thought the 3rd card was the base and the first was the foil, but never was exposed to the middle. I think I have McKee's Artist Proof from that set in a box somewhere. Most of the cards from that set is stored in a box in the attic with the exception of the McKee for some reason. It has been 4 years since I looked at them.
