Habs trade Pacioretty to Vegas

At first glance, it looks like Vegas won this in a landslide, but Suzuki looks like he could be a solid player in the future, and a second round pick is never something to scoff at either. I guess time will tell.

Edit - No idea who should be captain.

At first I thought the same thing, and although I think Vegas made out much, much better in short term, (I think Tatar is a waste of oxygen), the overall return was better than they would have gotten at the trade deadline. A thirdliner, top 1st round prospect and 2nd round pick is pretty good for somebody that was not going to re-sign, and whose situation would have been a black cloud over the franchise all year.

Suzuki is a much better prospect than most thought we'd get back for Patches so I'm super happy with the return. A 2nd is always good, and Tatar could be flipped if we retain some salary.

If this had been a year ago I would have said "Ha, Habs fleeced Vegas, anyone who plays there will end up in misery with all the distractions."

Having seen their success, which, yes, probably is an anomaly, I'll kind of go with what Rob said. For the short term, it looks great for Vegas and will help their team stay solid and build on their inaugural momentum. But in the long run that pick, whomever it may be, and Suzuki could put this in the Habs favor. I think it really hinges on the latter.

Habs worked on a new contract for over a year and couldn’t get it done, Vegas got it done in less then 12 hours  obviously Habs didn’t want to get it done as it was first reported that Pac wanted to stay in Montreal.

Both teams won and did what they needed to do. Montreal needs the Prospects and Picks, Tatar was just a toss-away IMO, I think Mcphee was slightly embarrassed to have traded so much for so little, so best to get him out of sight and hope he doesn't come around and put up big numbers.

Vegas needs that last little bit of offensive power to maybe push them to the final dance...again.

Patch won the lottery!

Tax rates are good in Nevada too. I'm happy for him, with a decent center he might do 40+ goals.

For the C, Gallagher is worthy of it, but I don't think we can pass over Weber, with his experience, calm and leadership. But, Weber might be the next to go in this reconstruction. Maybe Price will go too.

Forward lines pretty much set.

Karlsson - Marchessault - Reilly
Stastny - Pacioretty - Tuch
Eakin - Haula - Reaves
Bellemare - Carrier/Lindberg - Nosek

Defence needs some tweaking with Schmidt's suspension. And Theodore needs to be re-signed.

Theodore - Miller
McNabb - Holden
Merrill - Engelland
Hunt

They could keep Brannstrom and Hague up for awhile and give them each 9 games until Schmidt is back. Depending how they look.

Habs get Suzuki which potentially solidifies them down the middle in the future. Kotkaniemi, Suzuki, Poehling. As much as Bergevin denies it, and still claims Habs can make the playoffs with Price and Weber, they are in re-build mode.

Tatar is a warm body back and Vegas glad to get rid of an overpay that didn't fit the system. Vegas is in a position of luxury because have a ton of extra picks.

Detroit is the beneficiary of that original trade which landed them Veleno, and future picks.

I think this is a win win for both teams. With how long this has dragged on I think Montreal fans should be pleased with the return.
