I'm looking at the standings and I see this:

NYI - 80 GP, 46 W, 98 pts - clinched
DET - 81 GP, 42 W, 98 pts - cliched
OTT - 81 GP, 42 W, 97 pts
PIT - 80 GP, 42 W, 96 pts
---------cut off in the East------
BOS - 81 GP, 41 W, 95 pts

If BOS wins their last game and OTT loses, they're tied in wins, so it would come to the next tie breaker

"The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included."

OTT-BOS Games

Nov 1 = Ott (2) @ Bos (4)
Dec 13 = Ott (3) @ Bos (2) S/O
Jan 3 = Ott (3) @ Bos (2) S/O
Mar 10 = Bos (3) @ Ott (1)
Mar 19 = Bos (4) @ Ott (6)

That's 6 points for Ottawa and 6 points for Boston. However, since its a non-even number of games, the first game where Boston won doesn't count and its 6 points for Ottawa and 4 for Boston.

So, even if Boston wins their next game they have the same number of points as Ottawa & Ottawa holds the tie breaker. Ottawa is in the playoffs and Boston's only hope is a (preferably regular) win against Tampa Bay and that Pittsburg gets no more than 1 point in the next two games against the NYI & BUF.

Go Sens.

Ottawa doesn't have the wins tiebreaker. Shootout wins aren't included for the purpose of tie breaking, and the bruins have 37 ROW, and the Sens only have 36.

SO vs non SO wins (I think) is the tiebreak that Ottawa loses on.....

I know I heard last week (with 3 games to go) that they would hold the tiebreaker against nobody. Had to have more points than one of the other teams they were fighting for position with.....

Looking good for them now though. They control it. Get a point, and you're in. I think Pittsburgh only needs 1 point out of their last two games to get in.

Key point though is it's now solely in Ottawa's hands - they don't need to rely on anyone else. All they have to do is get a point.

Go Sens!

Philly is a wild card. Not sure which team will show up and they play in Philly.. wow gonna be intense

Ott just has to take care of their own business. They control their own destiny. Win and your in. Go Sens Go.

Still a chance the Penguins lay an egg and both Boston and Ottawa get in. Even the Isles is no sure thing getting in playing Pittsburgh tonight and the Jackets tomorrow. these last 2 weeks have been full of intrigue.

Isles have already clinched a spot. The only unknown is who will get the last two spots out of Bruins/Sens/Pens.

I thought the first tiebreaker is ROW (right out wins)? Boston already has more. So if Bruins win, and Ottawa loses, Bruins are in. I think if they are tied in ROW, then it goes to season series.

If the Pens only get 1 pt, and the Bruins win, then they would be tied with points and ROW, and then it would go to the season series.

I assume the Pens are in since they have 2 games left, one is vs Buffalo. Although, if the Sabres lose the next game and the last game vs Pens is meaningless so they could actually try to win and they'd still finish last.

So to get in for sure (where you control your own destiny), Ottawa needs 1 pt, Pens need 2 pts.

Bruins need to win their last game and hope Ottawa loses in regulation or Pens only to get 1 pt in last 2 games.

Tampa could hold the B's final nail. Boston plays last on Saturday so they will know the outcome of the Pens and Ottawa games already.

ROW is Regulation and Overtime wins. W includes Shootout wins. ROW is 2nd tiebreaker. Bruins have more ROW, so they will go in if they tie the Sens in points.

There's no ties anymore. Get a point for being tied through 60, and they're in.

It's going to be a great couple days of hockey.

What a time to be alive!

that's what I meant, but it was a bit unclear.

I am pleasantly surprised how close the race is for the final playoff spots in both conferences. 3 weeks ago, I thought the east was settled.

It would have been more interesting if LA had won one more game.

Have to say that I never have actively rooted against my team (Flyers), but this might be the first time. I need someone to root for in the playoffs and I really enjoy watching a lot of the young guys on Ottawa. I agree that the Flyers can't beat the Carolinas or Buffalos of the world, but they always seem to play well against "playoff" teams. Also, I don't want the Flyers to pass Columbus and lose a ping pong ball in the lottery....Although maybe I will root for the Flyers winning in OT. Picking up the extra point will put them over Boston....

I personally can't stand how close the conferences are at all. The advent of the three point game has ruined the regular season in my eyes. The NHL will tell you they have parity. Truth is they artificially inflate the success of teams to make it seem like everyone is having a fantastic year, and keep the conferences close.

It's time to go to a 3 point or even four point regulation win game - they aren't getting rid of shootouts (remember, we have them because new hockey fans don't understand ties... Lawyer Gary sure has a high opinion of the hockey fan) so we'll never go back to 2 point games.

Funny thing is that I had the exact same convo today with a co-worker.

Although it makes perfect sense from a hockey fan perspective on why there should be 3 pts for a win, and 2 for an OT win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss, the hockey purists would never let that fly.

Plus the owners wouldn't either. My co-worker said has become business. It's in the owner's interest to see teams fighting for the playoffs down to the last game b/c tickets will sell out, and the last games are marketable and has huge TV advertising revenue b/c of increased viewers.

If the playoff race was settled 3 weeks ago, we'd all be turning off the TV and doing something else. We all have to admit that. Would I have any interest in a Pens/Buffalo game tomorrow if it wasn't b/c it had some playoff implications? Absolutely not.

And this thread wouldn't exist either.
