kind of off topic because its basketball.. but either way its sportscards..

jeremy linn of the knicks is taking the hobby by storm. but jeez im looking at the completed ebay sales dating back 2 weeks and its staggering the jump in sales.. mind blowing.

national treasures auto/jsy rc /99 :

completed sales :

february 3rd - $26.00, $24.95, $23.50, $21.71 $29.99

february 11th - $1100, $1450, $1650, $1825 $1950

february 14th - $1999 $1925

february 15th -$1950, $2000.......$3000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and a crapload more between 2k and 2500...

this doesnt even cover the mid end auto rcs like contenders that as little as 4 weeks ago were $2-$5 and now are $300-$400..

my god.. wish i was a jeremy linn fan/hoarder and loaded up. id have a mighty fine house down payment

I know players get hot, values in crease, but seriously.. has it ever been like this?

Linsanity!

insanity...

you mean... lin-sanicity!!!

I don't think anyone in hockey has done this before or ever will.

There is such a huge story of how Lin wasn't suppose to be what he is today that it is almost impossible in a hockey setting.

Closest I can think of is Kurt Warner in Football who only had a couple of rookie cards from Pacific which took a huge jump, though not in the thousands like Linn has.

To add:

I think the only way we will see this happen in the NHL is this:

AMERICAN...

Asian/Oriental kid

Never drafted, just started playing hockey in his late-teens or early 20s.

Playing hockey in a community that barely knows what the sport is.

Applying and scouted by teams, colleges, but never picked.

Gets a call one day to practice with a team. Does well in practice.

Injury occurs, and some how the team doesn't have a spare player or can not call up a guy to fill a roaster.

Signed to pro-tryout contract.

Actually plays in the game and doesn't sit on bench.

Goes out and pulls a Sam Gagner but with more points.

Clearly dominates the ice.

...

And plays in a BIG US HOCKEY MARKET

...

Other than that... to get this hype as Jeremy Lin... almost impossible.

That or the second coming of Gretzky in the modern day NHL where goalies doesn't just stand up and flash his arm or leg to try to save a puck.

Hockey collectors don't have the crazy people basketball collectors do. There are a couple players that sell well above what you'd expect them to (like the Linden style guys) but there isn't a region (like the Asian basketball collectors market) where you can expect people to raise the prices to unreasonable status.

Crosby's cup rookie jumped about $7,000 in a year, but I think much of that was thanks in part to the popularity rise in the Cup, not Crosby in general considering his YG topped out at around 350% what it was selling for before.

He'll come back down to earth before long. Knicks fans are actually afraid of Carmelo coming back because his ego will probably destroy the dynamic they've been riding since Lin took over.

basketball card market is the craziest of the 4 major sports

without looking, i bet 80% of the highest closed sales are basketball cards....50% being MJ

and since Lin is chinese, he has 1.3 billion followers lol....i think i read somewhere, he jumped from 20k followers on his tweeter (chinese version) to 2mil in 48 hours

Palo Alto barely knows what basketball is? Please.

when was his rc? THis year?

No 2010.

His rise is more impressive to me because his parents are Taiwanese, not Chinese, and he's a Christian. The fact that he is being embraced in such a way by mainland Chinese people shows how much that market craves for an identifiable basketball star, and how open and strong their sense of nationalism is.

The baseball guys can tell you that this is par for the course. Some kid comes up for his cuppa coffee, hits a couple of long balls and all of a sudden his ten cent rookie card is selling for $100 or more.

The only guy I can think of who MIGHT have a shot at pulling something similar is Bryce Harper once ESPN and everyone else hype the kid to the moon and back when he gets called up.

Jeremy Lin seems like he might be the real deal. Tom Brady and Albert Pujols come to mind. I passed on buying the 2001 Bowman Chrome Auto redemption at $300 and that card sells for $4,000 easily today.

Brett Lawrie is doing that right now.

His base Bowman Chrome Auto RC came out at about $70 and it has gone completely insane since November. Below is a small snapshot of the price differences:

Base Bowman Chrome Autograph - From: $70 To: $250
Blue Refractor Auto - From: $150 To: $450
Gold Refractor Auto - From: $500 To: $650-$800

It also helps that his card has been deemed an SSP and the hype around his 2012 season is over and above most players.

I was really hoping to get a Lawrie Chrome auto when I saw he'd be included in the set - then I saw the prices and said, "Nope nope nope."

Can someone explain to me why Basketball collectors are so bat**** crazy?

I feel like hockey is at par or even more collected than Basketball (around the world) but you'll NEVER see a card sell for $38,000 for a player on par with the talents of Blake Griffin or see a jump in value for what a Jeremy Lin is doing
