Anyone here have any heartbreaking auction or white whales stories? I'm fresh off if one and need to share it.

Finally found one of my white whale cards of the past 15 years - Legendary Signatures Gilbert Perreault autograph. They're XSP'd to 34 and I had never even so much as seen a picture of one until this listing.

Threw a hefty bid up on it and waited a few days. No other bids and no watchers. All of a sudden today, my bid is cancelled. Get a message from the seller telling me they received an offer they can't refuse and I should have contacted them if I really wanted it (????). Listing ends and I get a message that the card sold for a full $150 less than my max bid, which I would have gladly paid had I known.

In the grand scheme of everything going on in the world, this doesn't even begin to register, but dang what a gut punch. Someone else share your misfires so I can not feel as bad.

Did you share your Max bid with the seller? Make him feel bad! Sorry to hear that you missed out.

That sucks. I'd almost want to contact eBay and show them the message the seller sent, see if they'll do anything about it..

...which obviously they won't, but it's still nice to think every once in a while that they actually care.

As for mine, I missed out on an early McDonald's Gold Patch of Vincent Lecavalier /4, but only 2 were actually redeemed. A guy from Quebec and I got into a bit of a bidding war the last few minutes of the auction, and I ended up losing. That was when I decided to start using sniping programs

I did and their response was I should have told them sooner (again - ??????) and "you want me to get sued?"

This isn't the first time I've missed out on a card I want and it won't be the last. This one just happens to be my most wanted card for a significant fraction of my life. :p

Seems like an odd to to need to do with an auction listing.

Sorry to hear this happened and I hope the seller has great remorse about it.

Im seeing a very large number of online auctions that are on my watch list being ended early lately.

I was watching a card on ebay with 2 days left... saw it posted on facebook and made an offer of basically what it was currently at on ebay and the seller accepted and pulled it off ebay. I was surprised as it was going to sell for a lot more on ebay IMO.

I think sellers like dealing off ebay to avoid fee's and returns. Win-win for me and the seller.

Maybe I can help you feel better!

A few months ago I was following auctions on a couple of Scott Stevens cards I didn't have, that ended pretty close together. They were rare cards that never come up - one numbered to 5 and the other to 25.

Went to go place my bids on Friday... only to find out they had ended on Thursday. I had mixed up the days! I'll blame it on being home every day during the pandemic making it easy to lose track, but they went for prices that I would have easily beaten. It's probably the difference between me being able to post a decent Top 10 this year and not. I'll be kicking myself for a while.

Ooof. As a first time college professor who has spent half of my semester teaching multiple sections from home, I can 100% empathize with pandemic brain and every day running together, leading to missed deadlines.

If you're in this hobby or any other hobby you should have your stuff listed on multiple platforms instead of just eBay. Facebook, Instagram, Kijii/Craigslist, etc. are all free to sell on so why pay eBay's ridiculous fees if you can get the sale from somewhere else.

Ebay irks me. Pulling an item off during an auction window has always bothered me. I can understand if there was a reason (which I likely will have my doubts), but such is...
