Heath Ledger has a chance at an Academy award

Oh come on. The only reason he'll get a nod is because he's dead. There is no point nominating someone that has no chance of winning. A movie (or character) like that is not the kind that the Academy will award for any of the "big" awards like Actor, Picture, Director, etc.

It has happened 6 times before in the history of the awards. I can't comment as I have not seen the movie yet. Is it even in showing yet?

Not yet, it's due here in a few weeks. But my point was that the Academy won't give a Best Actor award (or even Supporting Actor--notice the article doesn't commit to either?) to a character in a "comic book flick".

The article tries to list villains in an apparent attempt to make readers think Ledger winning is a possibility, but characters like Hannibal Lecter are in a different league altogether.

I'm not letting any of this take away from the excitement I have toward seeing the film, but I'm also a big movie buff. Ledger getting the statue ain't happening. I wonder if it's some sort of early extra publicity for the movie, though. Not that they need it!

I won't get to see it until late august when I go on vacation. Nearest theatre is 550km, a little too far to drive to catch a flick haha.

The Ledger Joker figuers that were in Walmart are still going for decent money. The statue is cool but when it comes to statues I stick with the original character.

I agree. No point in discussing this till the movie is out, and we see what kind of a job he did.

At this point, from the previews, he looks to have made a really great "dark" Joker.

As said before, major acting awards dont go to comic book flicks.

From the trailers, I'll say this much: Given that the current movie(s) are "This is Batman in the real world" oriented, Ledger's take is very true to that. It also captures the hair-trigger, terrifying psychotic killer that is the Joker.

There's a line in Underworld Unleashed that best summarized the Joker:
"When villains want to scare each other, they tell Joker stories."

He's unpredictable, twisted, and has a lethal sense of humour. Combine that with his incredible talent for body counts....

I'm looking forward to this movie. A lot.

But didn't Johnny Depp get nominated for being a pirate? I'm sure Ledger has a legitimate chance based on his performance alone. A lot of actors have died while making movies and never had a chance. Remember Brandon Lee. But if this role is questionable, how do you explain these nominations:

Harrison Ford: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Jeff Bridges: Starman
Marisa Tomei: My Cousin Vinny (SHe won)
Sigourney Weaver: Aliens

ya'all should work where I do....got about 260 Jokers, and they aint actors..LOL
Should be a decent movie tho...they'll get my $6.50

My reasoning is based simply on Ledger being in a comic book movie (I don't believe Lee was nominated for anything). None of those nominees you listed were in that genre. I guess Raiders could almost count since it was of the pulp variety, but it was not tied to any title like Batman. But you bring up a good point nonetheless, especially since Depp's was based loosely on a Disney ride.

I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if he does win, and the cynic in me says it may come down to who he'll be up against. But as I've mentioned, or at least alluded to, I'm looking forward to this flick. A lot.

Got to see the Dark Knight last night and I laughed at the talk of Heath Ledger winning an Oscar but after watching the movie he should be nominated.
An incredible performance and the guy really creeped me out. All in all I suggest if you are a Batman fan to check it out as I thought it was the best Batman movie made!

I really love how he made the pencil disappear. That is by far one of the greatest performances I've ever seen.

Heath was unbelievable. That was one of the bet performances I've ever seen. Every time he was on screen I was stunned and mesmorized how intriguing and interesting he made the part.

My wife and I went to see it last night. It was a good movie, but nothing great. I wasn't disappointed, but I don't think it was necessarily worth all the hype. Bale's "Batman voice" was annoying and I didn't see anything particularly extraordinary with Ledger's performance. I thought the acting by both Eckhart and Oldman were better. Oh well.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, if Ledger does indeed get a nomination or win, I think it will have more to do with the people he'll be up against. He should in no way be a shoe-in.

<I'll now duck as the insults are thrown my way>
