Well I have be absent from collecting cards for a while. I really wanna get back into the hobby.
I last was collecting Alex Tanguay but now find it a bit "boring" to collect him as he does not get much new cards.
So here is my issue. I wanna start a new collection but not sure what or who.
1. I like the Habs,
2. I need to keep collection fairly cheap or at that right price so i can try and get rare cards also.
3. Have had an interest to do young gun set of every year because the rookies are desired by many collectors so will hold some kind of value over time.
4. I am thinking A player and on the side doing young guns.

Any suggestions on who I should collect or how I could do a Team collection?

Pick a specific set you like and do that
I really like Kovalchuk but he's got stuff everywhere, and I really like Certified, and I like to hoard, so i pick up only Kovalchuk Certified stuff and as much of the /25 stuff and under as I can.

I really like the way henrique plays I've followed him for awhile so I pick up his rc year stuff, got alot of it. Alot of it. But I don't hoard his stuff.

Thats how I break my stuff down.

Keeps it fun.

I would say collect what you like. Don't let somebody else make that decision for you.

Be it a Hab player, Young Guns or whatever, I think the key is defining what the collection would consist of.

Young Guns - Will it fit in your budget? Even those big name rookies that can command some top dollars? SeriesI? Series II? Both?

Player collection - Are you a completist? Do you want it all or just jerseys? Autos? Base? How many cards does said player have right now? Is that an intimidating amount? Can I afford him?

Ask questions. The more questions you ask yourself the more refined your parameters will become.

I think that a well-contemplated, purposeful collection decision will result in a much more enjoyable hobby experience.

or you could just collect Tomas Plekanec

Good luck.

Well, thanks for the opinions so far. I like to collect the jersey, autos, patches, base, ect. I like the variety. so thats why I wanna do the the young guns cause i could complete sets and a player or team I could enjoy the chases.
But not sure who on the hads I would wanna collect. so I guess thats were I was looking for player suggestions

I see this being asked a lot on the boards and I was in the same position a couple years ago after a hiatus from the hobby. Here are a few questions I asked myself that helped determine the direction of my collecting:

1. How much can I spend?
-This will answer a lot of your concerns. I found that with my budget I could not be a player collector as I am a perfectionist/completionist so getting every single card was not a realistic goal for me on my budget. I limited my player collecting to TRUE RCs of PC players and vertical auto's (this is due to the way I display my cards)
-Picking a PC player is entirely up to you. I collect Fowler because I went to high school and played baseball with him. I collect Helm because he is a player that I enjoy watching play the game and he fits within my budget!

2. What do I enjoy?
-As I said before, with my completion OCD I like the satisfaction of having something complete. Therefore I decided that I would enjoy completing a set yearly. This had to be something consistently produced and within my budget. I went with the good ol' Upper Deck set with Young Guns.
-I also enjoy collecting rookie cards. So I picked a few sets that are what I consider mainstays in the hobby and decided to get the rookies from my team, the Red Wings. The sets are Upper Deck, SP Authentic, and Contenders.

3. Wait, what about my teams?!?
-The Red Wings are my team so I look out for autos that are aesthetically appealing to me, no particular players or sets.
-The Plymouth Whalers are my local junior team and I follow them closely as well. The only set that pictures these guys in their uniform is ITG Heroes and Prospects. So I try to get a copy of each of the base cards and the autos (no memorabilia)

That sums up my PC in a nutshell and is what works for ME. That's is what it all comes down to, what YOU want to collect. No one here will ever judge you on what you collect or how much your collection is worth. That is one among many reasons why HI is the best!

Personally I think that unless something jumps out directly to you like "I want that guy" or "I love this set" it is not worth doing. Starting a collection of some random guy you have no interest in beyond him being a Hab player or he's a decent price to buy because he's cheap right now is doomed to eventual regret.

You seem to love the Young Guns. Focus on that until something else arises to you.
