Hey UD...how about something like this?

Upper Deck is probably already doing it in conjunction with Expo. The promoter brings in guest signers and they in turn also sign on the side for Upper Deck to use in various products.

Norm, I think you misunderstood Ryan, that is nothing like what he is referencing? This isn’t about just doing a random private signing to acquire some autographs? He’s talking about the Topps NOW program and how they are parlaying it into a goldmine with an exclusive athlete by doing multi-layered promotions.

If you read the article, one of the things Topps is doing is probably one of the most unique and cool things ever in the hobby. They are going to allow some collectors to literally design their own 1/1 Derek Jeter cards, and then bring them to a luncheon to meet Jeter and have him sign those cards for the collectors!

Cool idea for sure!

Thanks for sharing this, as I have very limited knowledge when it comes to the other sports in the hobby and the stuff that goes on within them.

If I were you, I’d just pop over to Topps.com a few times a week and browse all the new stuff they have every 24-48 hours, utterly incredible the things they’re doing. They absolutely rule trading cards in the ingenuity and innovation segment.

As far as other sports, basketball is currently king for sales, namely because it runs so deep with the international collectors, especially in the Asian markets, AND the current Chicago Bulls/Michael Jordan documentary “The Last Dance” is incredible. I recommend you watch that if you know who Michael Jordan is and are a sports fan.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the "big" points (ex. Basketball sales are nuts, etc), but checking out Topps does sounds like a good idea to find out those cool things they are doing within the hobby over there. Thanks.

I've also seen The Last Dance up on Netflix since i'm a big sports fan in general. I've been meaning to give that series a go.

Topps is literally printing money.

Unless their exclusive excludes them from doing this, if I'm in charge of Upper Deck, I'm getting Wayne Gretzky involved in creating his own set and selling his autographs in tiers like this.

I doubt Upper Deck is in business in 5 years. They will be acquired, or go into bankruptcy, and we can move on.

The upside is if Topps had an NHL license I would probably be busting tons of wax. So UD
being as brutal as they are saves me 5k a year.

I mean, when was anyone been truly excited about anything UD has done? For me its 1990.

I have been wondering the exact same thing because they have an exclusive with Wayne AND the NHL exclusive license. But my spider sense is tingling and telling me that we all already know the answer.............see below.

I don't know if they ever will go away. Sorry, let me rephrase, the name will likely stay forever, but with new ownership and much better financial backing. Upper Deck still has a name synonymous with the hobby along with Beckett and few other things.

I am eternally hopeful someone like Topps can acquire them and the technology UD has and subsidize it with their own. That, along with implementing better ideas and components of Topps, namely the aforementioned cash cow which is Topps NOW.
