Resting in Peace,
I have finally joined the ranks of the 1000 posters. I feel I’ve now earned the right to make a few observations about HI and the Hockey card hobby in general.
First up Hobby Insider is the one and only hobby site I belong to, participate on and visit everyday. I don’t know about the other sites, so I don’t comment on them, HI is my home.
I have been fortunate enough to meet some great people here and though we may not have met face to face, I feel a kinship with many collectors. I have my favorites that I read everything they post and some people I watch just to see there collections grow through the show & tell forum. I’ve made some awesome trades and have had the good fortune to not have any go down in flames. (knock on wood) Issues I have with trading are similar to those of other traders here on HI.
1. The number of posts and bumps by some members.
2. The number of similar posts. Ie: 3 or more posts for wanting Crosby or whoever and then 3 more posts to trade Crosby or whoever. It makes me wonder if anyone ever bothers to read other posts before they start their own.
3. And this is the big one for me, the generosity of HI members. It happened to me recently where in a trade for one card I had the other member ended up giving me twenty some odd cards in return. Although very thankful to this member I was left feeling like I had somehow cheated him. I feel he was coming from a place of generosity and really wanted the card I had, but holy crap I wish I had given him more. I will endeavor to increase my generosity as a result of this member’s actions and my need to pay it forward.
I realize there is this fictional and ever changing thing called “book value”, but I am not someone who uses it. The only time I buy a Beckett book is when Martin Brodeur is on the cover and then I’m buying it to add to my collection, not as a price guide.
Which brings me to my final issue: I have thousands of cards (not a lot of high end). I don’t sell on the bay due to their high costs. And I have no idea how to sell on HI because of the never ending “price dance”. I’ve thought about making a buy & sell post stating that I will not dance, so send me an offer and if it is reasonably close to what I feel is a decent offer for the card, it is yours and if I think you’ve been sniffing glue I will ignore you. Which is my real issue, because of the value I place on my pc differs from the value you place on yours. Where there is no sale price in the world that could interest me enough to purchase a Flyers or Penguins player card I have been known to spend a few coin on Devils stuff no one else wants. At the other extreme is the ungodly prices some people want for their Martin Brodeur cards and the same price that some collectors are willing to pay. And the dance goes on.
So in conclusion, thanks for sticking through my rant. Thanks for making HI a great place to spend my time. Please continue to feel free to express your opinions on this and other issues, especially in the “parking lot forum” & “Hockey forums” I love reading that stuff.
Stay tuned for my upcoming 1000th post contest, once I think of something to challenge you all with and some nice prizes to giveaway.
