Trying to understand why Poge is getting any hobby love at all, I understand he's a leaf but this guy has been nothing but inconsistent at best, thats being kind. I'm stumped, anyone shed some light??

The Leafs are, simply put, shrouded in more darkness than Palpatine. Any ray of light will be grabbed quickly. A lot of it is the memory of the 2006 WJC and the hopes that he can be their version of Carey Price.

You say yourself that you 'understand he's a Leaf' but clearly you don't if you are asking why he gets hobby love.

All he will be is another Leafs prospect that will either just fade away in the AHL, or be traded for another hopeless leaf prospect. Don't get me wrong I hope the kid succeeds, but with the Leafs track record with prospects, his future looks dim to say the least.

Well as a leaf fan, its not that clear, being a leaf fan doesn't = being an idiot, as seems to be implied in your comment (i could be wrong), however as a leafs fan, how can I get excited over a guy who simply is not a great goalie, he even has played his fair share of backup with the Marlies.

It's a numbers thing. We have all seen what can happen to cards of no name players if there are a handful of passionate collectors driving the prices up. Now what if that "handful" was more like thousands and thousands of Leaf fans? Even if a small percentage of those thousands believe Pogge is the second coming, you still have a demand that outnumbers supply.

This can be applied to just about anybody in a Leaf uniform, and I believe this is what Ernie was referring to.

Believe me, I understand. I am a DIE hard Leafs fan... I bleed blue and white. But the point is fans always gravitate towards their own prospects... and since the Leafs have an incredible amount of fans and they are very passionate it makes sense.

I really don't mean any disrespect and I don't want this to come off as rude by any means but it's rather simple. I don't get the Pogge hype either but theres obviously thousands of Leaf fans who do.

After the WJC win, Pogge got hyped as a potential franchise cornerstone, and out came the rose coloured glasses. He's been Average in the AHL, not something that bodes well for a future "franchise goaltender."

I'll try to give a different opinion here - not so much as to the whole hobby, but from MY perspective...I'll go out on a limb and say I probably have the most extensive Pogge collection out there (cards only - not into other stuff). Why Pogge?

When I started my JP collection a couple years ago, I picked him because (a) he was young, and hopefully had a long career in front of him, (b) he was a goalie and I wanted to collect a goalie, (c) he was in the Leafs org (of course - I also bleed blue & white), and (d) looking at him in the WJC, I figured he had an upside.

Now, do I regret starting a Pogge collection that I have invested a lot of dollars into? Nope. Why not? He's obviously not the second coming like he was being touted (yet)...he's fairly inconsistent in whatever league he's playing in, as noted above. I will continue to collect Pogge cards because he's a player I just like to follow. I know he's most likely never going to be a Roy or Brodeur 15-20 years down the road when I look at my collection value, but hey...will Price?? :) I'm just collecting him for my own enjoyment.

Now as for the value of his cards, I think we're already starting to see them come down (good for me LOL) as some of the initial prospectors that jumped on the train a few years back are getting out. I have noticed where, say, an ITG Complete Jersey card would have easily fetched $100-$150 a year ago can't even sell at $80-$90 now. Economy is partially to blame for all prices, but just noticing this in regards to Pogge.

Just my 2 cents worth :)

Less love for Pogge and more for Tlusty! Pogge is still living off the hype of his very successful WJCs, but that won't last. The Leaf's are also used to having some pretty good goalies in the past such as Potvin, Belfour, Cujo so I am thinking that some fans are hoping he is the second coming of those regimes. But bottom line is that many, many other young goalies have overtaken Pogge in the pecking chart. Elliot, Rask, Mason and even Tobias Stephan....

I love my goalies. I also love any goalie who's seen action for Team Canada. He'll be on my list for life. His play has little to nothing to do with why I collect goalies. Some goalies are the Masks. Some are their Names. Pavelec, Kari Lehtonen, Tretiak.....

Others are their numbers. Pupa, Tretiak, 29!!!......

Then there's Carey Price. Great personalty, down to earth, great family, great friends, and a great story.
