I just saw Dave's post about his card shop closing. Is the hobby store going to be a casualty from the lockout? Are there other stores in closing in Canada? Just curious from someone in the States...

Im not so sure about other places in Canada, but I live in Sault Ontario, and its not so much the lockout but when I started collecting 4 years ago there was 5 card shops. Now there are 2, and 1 of them is inside of a clothing store.

Talking to the person that owns the cardshop said that the only thing that he can do now is sell. He cant afford to buy to much or put together many big projects for himself. He used to always trade me a box for a few jerseys or autos but he cant do that anymore either.

Just to clerify, the store that is closing is not a hobby store, but rather a "smoke and gift shop" that carries cards. The hobby store near me is going strong.

There're two local money pits of consequence, and two of lesser importance. Of the two better stores, one is surviving thanks to other sports-related merch. The other ain't doin' so hot, largely as he's not stringent enough about collecting from the people who owe him LOTS of money. Still, he's a good guy and a fair an' honest dealer, but he's just not thriving at the moment.

The other two...well, one of them carries hockey cards. I wouldn't really call them a hobby shop - they mainly cater to the Yu-Gi-Oh/Pokemon type kids, as well as the miscellaneous memorabilia crowd - plaques, flags, beer steins, etc. Finally, there's Roy. Roy is the greatest BS artist in the Western Hemisphere. Whatever card you ask about, three others have asked about that day alone, and he's gotten more phone calls from hockey players than Alan Eagleson when the scandal broke. He has nice stock, but he's too attached to it, cares nothing about developing a customer base, and is generally an arse-boil to deal with.

They're ALL suffering thanks to the lockout.

As I posted earlier (but was lost in the crash a while back), one local pit is closing it's doors at the end of this month. He claims it is because of the lock-out, but I made a point of (and shouldn't have) telling him that perhaps his demeanor and attitude had something to do with his undoing (for the record, anyone that has been to Major Leagues in Burlington knows what I mean), and that if he starts up again he should hire staff to run the store instead of him  The guy has athe personality of dried-up ragweed in the middle of an ice storm. He caters only to those that wave $100 bills openly in his store, and on several occasions accused regular patrons of shoplifting

But hey, I digress. The fact of the matter is that only those stores that offer more than hockey seem to be doing OK (in the Golden Horseshoe area)

haha,
That's awesome that you told him that Glenn haha.
Loveit.

I still haven'ttold my fam that they're closing, mostly because they'll tell me those stories.

Is he liquidating wax or anything? or just being a miserable jerk about it?

hey major leagues is closing? its just down the street from me....used to go there every weekend until i found ebay with its prices discounted 50% from what he tries to charge
as a young collector i feel he pretty much took unfair advantage of my willingness to spend my paycheck and often would pay 75$ for boxes like 99-00 BAP Memorabilia
glad to hear he wont be open for long perhaps it will teach him how to deal with people

anybody else in the area use any other shops?

Phil.....George (Major Leagues) have a sale? (slap, slap)......Not one penny :p

Brandon, the only local place left for me is in Oakville called Comic Connection. The proprietor (Rich Stokes) is a pretty good guy, but I have heard of late that he is now catering more to Yugi-oh (or whatever) and the like. Maybe Phil can comment on this?

Actually, ther is another place called Imperial Coin on Harvester (near the IKEA). He is mostly vintage stuff, but a decent guy (Eddie). Very knowledgeable on cards so it's pretty tough to get a real good deal.

haha,
what was I thinking.

Rich is a good guy, most of the time ;) if only he would still hold cards for me we'd get along perfectly :D used to but itall goes to ebay now.

There is a little more yu-gi-oh there than there was, but there's a couple reasons really.
1 being there's next to no new product out hockey wise,
and there's way less hockey collectors apparently.

I'm planning on going there tomorrow or day after.
But yeah, he has a ton of the other comic related stuff now, more than the sports, baseball season is off, basketball collectors aren't plentiful and football is the same I guess. Yugioh is where he makes the profits if I had to guess.
that and the ebay business.

But yeah, overall that's the place to go in the area forsure.

Dude! I may swing by there tomorrow (Wednesday). Maybe we could hook up and go for Tim's or something. Let me know if you can go tomorrow (maybe late morning?)

Glenn

Well, I need to be at the Mississauga power center around 10 to 10:30, then into Oakville from there. So maybe 11 ish?

ummmmm  I don't think he opens til noon. How about then? :o

Not sure when he opens up, so I'll call round 11, and if not then call @ 12.

Somewhere in there would be decent.

In conversation with Darren today! I'm in Cowtown BTW! He informed me that if the current NHL situation continues! He'll most likely have to go and get a real job (Again!) and only be opened in the evenings again!

He'll not be closing up shop as you elluded too!

Hope this clarifies the situation.

And to Glenn & Phil! Sorry for Hijacking your Hijacked thread!
