hockey 101 question

Apparently it's called the referee's crease - I didn't know there was a name for it!

From NHL officials rules:

A misconduct penalty shall be imposed on any player or players who, except for the purpose of taking their positions on the penalty bench, enter or remain in the Referee’s crease while he is reporting to or consulting with any game official including Linesmen, Timekeeper, Penalty Timekeeper, Official Scorer or Announcer.

thanks...i dont think i noticed it till i was looking at a diagram of the rink recently since many camera angles block it.never paid attention to it at a game seen in person

Yes its the refs crease. Players are supposed to stay out of it as per the rule posted above. This crease exists in all levels of hockey not just the NHL.
