The recent post on forum activity and lurkers (for which I am one) inspired me to put this together as I've been meaning to share this collecting somehow. So grab a coffee, I have some catching up to do :)
I have a bunch of packs posted on instagram (@hockeypackproject) but the mishmash of photos doesn't capture the collection or goal very well.
My goal in the "Hockey Pack Project" is to get a sealed pack and every variation from all hockey products from 2000 to present. Why 2000? Simply because I was born in '91 and it's the start of the millennium that I started to collect and identity with the packs and players. A HUGE project for sure. I started with the Upper Deck Series 1 & 2 packs a few years ago and I guess you could say it snowballed from there. For seasons like 2021-22 I'm missing only 3 "packs" while for years like 2001-02 I'd estimate I'm only at about 50% complete. It's been challenging finding the older sealed packs.
I picked a single year to show here but you can imagine how many sealed packs I currently have. A quick count is roughly 50 full binders. All unique packs.

Click on images for a bigger picture. I know most people don't find the back of packs very interesting so I've left those images small. Click on the images for ones you can read. When I've only picture the back of variants, its because there is no difference to the front. The back of the pack is the easiest way to tell which variant you have. These are easily distinguished by the barcodes.
I've added some additional information to highlight some of the notable differences from the variants, in particular how to find the various colors of Dazzler inserts in UD1 and UD2.

As far as I know, nobody has been tracking the pack variants of modern products. That makes these all the more interesting to me.
When I first started this project years ago, I thought there were just hobby and retail UD1/2 variations, boy was I wrong. It has been fun finding and recording all the variants.

2021-22 Fleer Ultra and Ovation were epack only releases so no pack to show for those products.
I also have a box/pack of Upper Deck Clear Cut 2022-23 that I'm mentioning here because it contains 2021-22 cards as well. I have chosen to keep it with my 2022-23 releases.

What I know I need: The Cup, Black Diamond and the 2022 Spring Expo Promo pack. I say "what I know I need" because since there's no variant pack checklist, I can't be 100% sure I have them all. However, I'm fairly confident I do in this case excluding those last 3. The Cup and Black Diamond I don't have because I can't swallow the cost and the Spring Expo pack has evaded me.

Here are all the various packs and pack variants from 2021-22.

Upper Deck Series 1

Hobby packs offer a number of inserts that are not found in retail packs. Inserts like high gloss and rare autographs are hobby only. Blue Dazzlers inserts are found in hobby packs.
Hobby pack front:

Hobby pack back:

The rest are all 'retail' packs

Regular retail pack. Dazzlers are Blue 1:24, Pink 1:144 and Red 1:12.

Regular blaster. Notable difference from other retail packs is Green Dazzlers 1:6
These retail packs are particularly easy to distinguish. The regular blaster packs are the only ones with 'BLASTERS' written above the barcode.

Blaster with oversized Young Guns card. Notable difference from reg. blaster packs is Green Dazzlers 1:5. Insert odds similar to regular blaster otherwise.

Walmart mega blaster box with bonus 94-95 pack. Compared to the regular blaster packs, odds improve on almost all inserts in these mega box packs other than Young Guns. (Young Guns odds remain consistent at 1:4 for all retail packs). For example, Canvas inserts are 1:14 in regular blaster boxes and 1:7 in the mega boxes. Blue Dazzlers 1:24 packs and Pink Dazzlers 1:144 packs.

Tin. Like mega boxes and regular retail packs, odds on inserts are pretty much doubled compared to the regular blaster packs. Orange Dazzlers 1:8.

Upper Deck website exclusive blaster with bonus Team Triples pack
Odds similar to other mega boxes. Dazzlers Blue 1:24 and Pink 1:144.

Gravity pack (larger boxes typically found in retail stores like Shoppers). Like mega boxes and tins, insert odds are much better than a regular blaster pack. Dazzlers are Blue 1:24, Pink 1:144 and Red 1:12. Inserts and odds are all the same as a regular retail pack.

Target Mega box w/Rookie Class bonus pack front
The front of these Target mega box packs are unique in that they are english only. All other packs have bilingual text on the front.

Target Mega box w/Rookie class bonus pack back. Odds on inserts are good similar to Walmart mega boxes. Dazzlers are Blue 1:24 and Pink 1:144. The backs are also English only, unique to the Target megas.

Dollar store pack front:
*It differs from the other retail packs in that in contains only 4 cards, as noted on the front.

Dollar store pack back
The ONLY inserts in these packs other than base cards are Young Guns and they are HARD to pull, inserted 1:50 packs. The Dollar packs are by far the worst buy.

Fat pack Walmart/Canada
*Bilingual and has 26 cards compared to 32 in the Target version.

Fat pack Walmart/Canada back:

Fat pack Target/US
*English only and most interesting, the last fat back to contain 32 cards. They cut the count from 32 to 26 for fat packs from here on. Strange that they did it between distribution of Canada/US (or Walmart/Target). Also interesting is that the inserts differ between the two variants. OPC update inserts, for example, are only available in the 26 card bilingual packs. Orange Dazzlers.

Fat pack Target/US back:

Starter Kit
*I've included this 'pack' because there are 3 packs included in these. The packs are exactly the same as regular retail packs.
The kits also inlcude 1 Sophomore Sensations insert only available in these kits, so that does make these notable.

And here are the various "Bonus" packs from UD1

Notice how the 'bonus' backs don't have barcodes. They aren't intended to be sold separately.

Tin back:
Dazzlers Orange 1:8.

Retail pack with oversized blaster back:

Walmart Mega Blaster with 94-95 bonus pack back:
Dazzlers Blue 1:24.

Upper Deck Store exclusive blaster back:
Dazzlers Blue 1:24.

Gravity back:
Dazzlers Blue 1:24 Red 1:12

Regular blaster pack
While the boxes do have bilingual text, the packs do not. This differs from UD1, which had bilingual packs in regular blasters. Dazzlers Green 1:6.

Regular blaster pack back:
Curiously, these don't have the word BLASTER on them above the barcode like their UD1 counterparts.

Target Mega box back:
Like the regular blaster packs and typical for Target exclusives, the fronts of these are english only.

Dallar pack. 4 cards only.

Dollar pack back:
Like UD1, the only inserts in these packs are Young Guns at 1:50.

Fat/rack pack Walmart/Canada
*This pack is bilingual. Dazzlers Orange 1:10

Fat/rack pack Walmart/Canada back:

Fat/rack pack Target/US
*English only. Unlike Series 1, the odds and inserts are the same in both fat pack variations of UD2.

President's Choice Sold Gold back:
*This back is notable! Hand numbered /150.

I'm not a fan of Leaf products. I really dislike the designs and feel like they are more of a money grab than something created for fans like President's Choice produces. I may, down the road, pick up a pack (box) of Leaf Signature Series, Leaf Lumber and Leaf Art of Hockey (this product I find tolerable). I do have Leaf Pro Set Memories blaster tucked away I won't bother digging out. I also have a UD rookie box set and Seattle Kraken box set squirrelled away as part of this project.

"Bonus" Packs

In my pack project collection I have many packs from minor league teams and leagues. I tend to pick them up haphazardly if the price is right but sometimes it's hard to find actual packs vs team sets. For 2021-22 there are a handful of packs released in Britain by Blindside Trading Cards. I opened a few packs for fun and the quality is actually pretty good with some nice inserts and autographs.

2022 Choice Sports Cards B4V Battle For Vegas
I don't know a lot about these cards but I do know there are a bunch of hockey cards in it.

Finally...

If you're wondering, this is how I store all the packs:

Each new year fills up 2 binders. The official Upper Deck binders work marvellously and present well.

In the binders, I use painter's tape to both hold the packs in place and for labelling purposes.

And for those curious, I get these packs through various dealers and collectors. I'll bust box or blaster and keep a sealed pack. Shops like Imaginaire are great because they're respected and sell individual packs of new products.
My intentions are to open them all someday when I'm old or dying. I'm 33 so I don't anticipate that to be anytime soon!

What a heck of a show.

I'm thinking that this was my last year of buying a iot of stuff.

This show and tell is going to be a valuable resource for a lot of people going forward, IMHO.

Good luck with keeping them sealed and I appreciate the pack education.

Holy.

Hell.

Wow.

Did I miss it or do you have a want list somewhere? Not that I'd have anything, I just was curious if anything that seemed easy remains elusive....

This is great. Thanks for taking the time and hope to see some of your other years posted here in the future.

I would not have the willpower not to open them all as soon as I had them.

What an interesting and unique collection! Thank you for sharing.

I have never seen those official Upper Deck binders and don't see them on their site. Where can they be found?

For the epack release only, would it be worth just downloading the pack image to put in your collection so once the item is sold out you still have a record of it.

Awesome display!!!

Being addicted to Solid Gold, I couldn't leave it unopened. I'd go crazy! :taz:

Thanks for the comments everyone!!

Did I miss it or do you have a want list somewhere? Not that I'd have anything, I just was curious if anything that seemed easy remains elusive....

For this year, I'm only missing the Spring Expo pack as well as The Cup and Black Diamond but those last two are because of cost. The Spring Expo is the one 2021-22 pack I'm actively seeking. For other years, unfortunately I don't have a wantlist. I keep track of them all with 'have lists' and record all the barcodes to keep track. Perhaps down the road as the older years get more complete, I'll work on a full wantlist.

What an interesting and unique collection! Thank you for sharing.
I have never seen those official Upper Deck binders and don't see them on their site. Where can they be found?

Imaginaire has a few listed for $10 but I have seen some dealers/shops give them away with purchases. These binders are much better than the tiny starter kit binders. You could fit a whole set in these ones.
I collect these big official Upper Deck binders and I've found ones for these years: 2008-09, 2009-10, 2013-14, 2015-16 and then starting in 2019-20 they've been consistent.

For the epack release only, would it be worth just downloading the pack image to put in your collection so once the item is sold out you still have a record of it.
Great idea! I'm going to start doing that. My long term goal is to create some kind of website/database listing all the variants so having those e-pack archives would be a great addition there.

That is a very cool collection, awesome presentation. I like to hold onto one empty pack after ripping stuff. I certainly don't have the will power you do to hold onto full packs.

Wow - that's awesome... like most have said here, the chance of a pack remaining unopened in my house is about the same as Easter chocolate making it to May... no will power on this guy.

Thanks for sharing!

Cory

Pack collectors are a special breed. I too would not have the will power to do it - So more power to you. What a sweet collection here!

Thank you for taking the time to share it

So cool - I had no idea there were so many variations!

Thanks for showing and good luck with the rest of the project.
