Hey guys, call me naive but how do you spot a fake patch? Ive had a few stellar ones through SP Authentic this year.

So i know that some good ones are real. How would you guys know for sure a patch is fake?

In some cases, you may not be able to tell, but here are some signs that you can look for: 1) patch material: sometimes the patch material isn't on par with nhl gear, even authentic retail jerseys. 2)return-on-investment, generally speaking if a card isn't going to sell for that much even with a nicer patch, it's probably not worth the hassle. 3) knowing what types of jerseys were wore at a certain time; this is one where manufacturer(s) have gotten into trouble. 4) damage, inspect the area around the patch for any unusual signs like bending or scratches/nicks.

I often replace great patches with one color ones ironically ;)

Nah, just make sure the guy selling them isn't named Kenny and you're more likely to be safe.

Anuske9, thanks for the info. If i could spot say an off colored jersey or tamper marks that would help. But for my pc collection im gonna stay away from the patches. Maybe id have better luck with autos.

penaltyman,Yeah i love those one color patches too!! At least we know they are real. lol!

That would be kenny from ontario, please correct this if I am mistaken ....not to be confused with (user ID ksehd ) Kenney from Imperial in Grande Prairie, Alberta

The best would be to compare with other cards, if one particular patch is way different from most others in general then i would say its a fake one.

I wonder what percentage of all the patches out there have been "Kenny-ed"....5%....25%

What do folks do with these patches? If someone offered me a "Kenny-ed" Crosby Cup RC for $100, who wouldn't want to have it (it is autographed after all).

What if a person "Kennys" a jersey, say of Mike Modano, with another Mike Modano game used piece? I know I am splitting hairs here, but I have always wondered how deep this rabbit hole goes....

I have always assumed that alteration was not awesome at all.... the only forms of alteration I would consider being

a) cracking a card out of a graded holder (a BGS 3 Gretzky Rc, for example)
b) taking a ITG card out of its top loader / sticker combo (Supurlative, for example)
c) on holograms (or other sparkley cards) I will take a cotton cloth to wipe off fingerprints

... and that is about it....

How about you folks?
