Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the months of April-June 2022. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 17 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase.
I'll divide the cards outside the top 15 by product release to try an minimize the length of the thread, so without further adieu lets get to it!
2005-06 UD Victory:
This past quarter saw some tough-to-find Oversized Victory card added to my collection, with three new cards of Smyth, Naslund and Gaborik. If anyone out there has any of these oversized victory card please let me know! I also added two new Gold Victory cards (Coburn and Comrie), along with two new Silvers (Lalime and Rafalski).
2005-06 UD McDonalds:
My only addition from the McDonald's release was a very rare insert card from the Chasing the Cup series of Joe Thornton. As an added bonus, the card still has the protective coating unpeeled. Each of these cards were numbered to 100.
2005-06 UD SPx:
My only pickup from the SPx product was a Spectrum base card of Dany Heatley /25. These cards are quite vibrant in hand and can fetch a surprisingly high number at auction given the right player is featured.
2005-06 UD Powerplay:
I was able to pickup a trio of dual coloured Powerplay jersey cards with LeClaire, Kovalev and Brodeur. As an additional, I added one rainbow parallel card of Giguere, numbered 35/35.
2005 UD Canadian Fall Expo /10:
Up next is a rare Tootoo redemption card from the 250 card set, each numbered to 10 copies. With this latest addition I now have 182/250 cards or 73% complete.
2005-06 UD Ice:
The Ice additions this part quarter featured a 3-colour Frozen Fabrics Kovalchuk patch /50 and a 3-colour Cool Threads Bergeron jersey. Not sure if Bergeron will return for yet another season, but if he is indeed finished he may be in the conversation for entering the HOF once eligible. I guess time will tell!
2005-06 UD Beehive:
The only beehive card outside the top 15 is an Adam Berkhoel Beehive Matte parallel rookie. While he only played 9 NHL games, all in his rookie season, he managed to carve out a career between the AHL and ECHL before retiring after the 2009-10 season.
2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects:
I have been working on collecting unique jersey swatch versions from this set and managed to acquire a Dion Phaneuf. If there are any other out there I'd love to add more!
2005 ITG Passing the Torch:
A nice product release by In the Game, especially for Brodeur and Roy collectors, this series only featured cards of the two goaltenders. I found three memorabilia cards of Roy; one jersey, one stick and a dual stick and jersey card.
2005-06 UD Black Diamond:
Speaking of great goaltenders, this next card is a Ruby parallel jersey of Martin Brodeur, featuring a two colour swatch. It is also numbered 66/100.
2005-06 ITG Heroes & Prospects:
My lone pickup from this set is a two colour Bobby Hull, with memorabilia being sourced from his hockey pants.
2005-06 UD SP Game Used:
The first card here is actually an error card, where Bruins memorabilia was inserted into Kari Lehtonen's Thrasher card. This does tend to happen on occasion, and I don't mind picking them up whenever given the opportunity. The second card also features a nice 3-colour Bruins jersey, this time however, belonging to the correct player.
2005-06 UD Rookie Update:
I managed to find some nice dual patch cards from the Rookie Inspirations collection, each card numbered to 25. My favorite of the bunch has to be the dual 3-colour Umberger/Primeau patch.
2005-06 UD Ultimate Collection:
This next card is among my favourite and fell just outside of the top 15. Joe Sakic was my introduction to hockey and my favorite player until a certain rookie came along in 2005-06. I still look for his cards when possible, and I was very happy to see him, Nate and Cale win the cup this past year.
2005-06 ITG Ultimate 6th Edition:
ITG Ultimate hold some of the most unique and special cards in my collection, and I was happy to add to more these last few months. The first is a nice Ed Giacomin 3-clr Jersey and Autograph card, gold version, and limited to 10 copies. The second is a card from my favorite set in the product, Emblem Attic. The Sid Abel emblem is a silver version /5, which goes along great with the gold 1/1 version I already owned!
2005-06 UD Trilogy:
Trilogy produced an excellent product this year, and I'm partial to the plexi-glass cards, similar to the McDonald's Chasing the Cup series. I was able to acquire two Zetterbergs, one Frozen in Time blue /25 and the autographed parallel /10.
2005-06 Upper Deck Series 1 & 2:
I had some great success in finding insert cards from this product, with eight rookie ink cards, two notable numbers, a dual generations jersey card and one 3-colour Majestic Material Brodeur /50. My favorite of the lot is by far the Brodeur.
2005-06 UD The Cup:
finally the last two showings which landed outside of the top 15, a Glen Murray Signature Patch /75 and a Limited Logos Eric Daze /50. The patch on the Daze is among the most unique I have seen to date, really striking in-person.
Now onto the top 15!
#15. 2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects En Fuego Parallel #175 Chris Holt RC (1/1)
Starting off the best of the best is a unique 1/1 card from the Hot Prospects series. These En Fuego parallels do not surface very often, even of lesser known players such as Chris Holt. While he only saw 10 minutes of action during his rookie season and 29 minutes total in the NHL, he had a respectable career between the AHL, ECHL and KHL and also scored a goal while with the Binghamton Senators.
#14. 2005-06 Upper Deck High Gloss /10 - Backman, Slegr, Draper, Lang, Moore.
At number 14 we have the quarterly check-in on my high gloss set progress. Q2 of 2022 saw five new additions. My favourite of the bunch has to be the Dominic Moore, as I remember watching him play for the Leafs growing. In researching for this post I was reminded that he had a second stint with the leafs in 2017 before hanging 'em up for good.
The five new HG cards brings my set totals to 259/487 or 53% complete.
#13. 2005-06 UD Game Patches /15 - Joseph, Datsyuk, Lidstrom
Another set that I have been working on for years, I was able to pick up a trio of Red Wings players, all of which were dominant during their respective careers. My favorite aesthetically is by far the Cujo, featuring the seldom seen three team card. He is pictured in a Red Wings uniform, patch is the "A" in "LEAFS" from a Toronto jersey, and the card background is a Coyotes Burgundy.
#12. 2005-06 UD Ultimate Endorsed Emblems /35 - Kovalchuk, Zherdev
The 05-06 Ultimate Endorsed Emblems set features a great checklist of HOF and star players from the time, hard signed autograph and great patch selection. While my two finds are not the most notable names from the set, the patches on both are second to none.
#11. 2005-06 UD Artifacts Bowman and Howe Parallel Lot - Base /899, Pewter /100, Blue /75, Red /50 and Emerald /25
This next lot features a near complete rainbow print of both Scotty Bowman and Gordie Howe Artifacts cards. The Artifacts product featured legends base cards numbered to 899, Pewter parallels /100, Blue /75, Red /50 and Green /25 and Gold /1. The only card missing aside from the gold 1/1 cards is a red Bowman. Truly a rare opportunity to pick up the print run all at once that I could not pass up.
#10. 2005-06 UD Ultimate #34 Gordie Howe Base /599 and Gold Parallel /25
Maintaining the theme of rare Howe parallels, at number 10 we have a base Ultimate card /599, along with the much more elusive gold parallel /25. This is the first Howe that I have seen to date. Aside from the serial number, you can observed the distinction between the two in the golden foil used on the stamped lettering and the Ultimate logo in the foreground.
#9. 2005-06 UD Black Diamond #185 Gordie Howe Ruby /100 and Gold /10
Fittingly, number 9 on the countdown has yet another lot of tough Gordie Howe Parallels. Here we have a nice ruby black diamond parallel /100 and the incredible rare gold parallel /10. The scans do not do these cards justice, as they are quite vibrant in-hand with a unique card surface texture used in the early days of the black diamond product line.
#8. 2005-06 UD Ultimate Premium Patches /35 - Brodeur, Kovalchuk, Hejduk
This may be my favourite set from the 05-06 Ultimate release, the large patch window makes for some great looking cards, especially in-person. These three new additions are no different. The Hejduk has an incredible 4-colour patch from the alternate wordmark Avalanche jersey, of the "C" in "COLORADO". The Kovalchuk has an eye-catching 4-colur piece from the Thrashers shoulder patch that can be observed in his picture on the card. And last but certainly not least, my favorite of the three, Brodeur. This card displays a 3-colour patch with numerous breaks from Brodeur's rookie season. This same jersey was used across multiple products in 05-06 and made for some memorable cards!
#7. 2005-06 The Cup RPAs /199 - 20 Card Lot
Up next is a 20-card lot of 2005-06 The Cup RPAs, all graded by BGS and featuring truly unique patches. I take great pride in finding some of the better patch variations from this set and I have been slowing picking away at the common rookies for some time now. Some of my personal favorites from the bunch include the 5-colour Seabrook, 5-colour Suter, 4-colour Jokinen, 4-colour Senators Bochenski and Eaves, and finally the 4-colour Sharks RPAs
of Gorges, Clowe and Bernier.
#6. 2005-06 UD The Cup Gold Parallel RPAs - Steen, Sigalet
Keeping with the Cup RPA theme, these next two additions are of the gold parallels of the base RPAs, each numbered to the player's jersey number. The Steen has an incredible 3-colour patch and a very limited print run with only 10 produced. The Sigalet is unique in that the patch appears to be a thick jersey piece, and I have seen this occur on one other gold Sigalet in the past. He also holds the record for shortest NHL career with 1 minute of action before he was forced to retire due to complications with MS.
#5. 2005-06 Fleer Ultra Ovechkin Difference Makers Patch (9/25)
Starting off the top 5 cards for Q2 2022 is the man that scored his way into the top 3 goal scoring list of all time this past year, and achieved his 9th 50 goal season along the way. This card was won at auction for far less than I anticipated but you'll find no complaints from me. This three colour patch also features the same picture used in his now iconic Young Gun rookie card.
#4. 2005-06 UD Victory Black Parallels /5 -Lemieux, McCauley, Burke
At number 4 we have a trio from an extremely limited and rare set, the Victory Black parallels numbered to only 5. While the pick ups of McCauley and Burke are special in their own right, the reason for this high of a rating for Q2 is due to the Mario Lemieux find. A HOF player and on the mount Rushmore of all time hockey players by a majority of historians, the black border compliments the penguins uniform beautifully. I am not holding my breath in finding another so I was not going to let this card slip from my grasp, I'm ecstatic to have it in my set.
Now onto the top 3.....
#3. 2005-06 UD Beehive Matte Parallel Crosby RC (8/25) BGS 9
I have been after this card for years! While I have seen about 3-4 copies of this card over the years, the asking prices were quite high and I had to pass or was outbid on all my previous attempts. Finally this card opened at auction and I was quite happy with the final price tag, especially with it having a high grade of BGS 9. I now own the Base, Red, Blue, Gold and Matte Crosby rookies and I am closing in on his beehive rookie print run, only missing a few autographs of his from that product.
#2. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used Authentic Fabrics Dual Patch Gretzky/Howe (20/35)
At number two we have an eye popping patch card featuring two of the greatest players of all time, Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky! While the Kings Gretzky patch is great, a nice 3-colour piece, the Howe patch makes this card incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a Howe patch quite like this for a smaller window, an almost symmetrical vintage Red Wings piece that seems to burst out of the card. While I'm not the biggest fan of SP Game Used patch designs from 05-06, they really nailed it with this card. I struggled not to put this card at number 1 of the count down, should really be 1b and not number 2. So what could beat this card out for the number one spot? Scroll down and find out!
And Finally #1...
#1. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used Extra Significance Gold Parallel Gretzky/Howe (2/10) PSA 7
It appears that only the combination of Howe and Gretzky can beat out the same combination, just on a card with increased rarity and featuring their autographs! I gave the nod to this dual card due to the limited quantity produced and having Gretzky in an Oilers uniform. This Extra Significance card is actually a gold parallel of the regular version which is numbered to 25 copies. This gold version is numbered 2/10, its the first Gretzky autograph in my collection and a great card to finish off the top 15 cards of this show-and-tell!
