This could be a REALLY LOOOONNGG post. Between the messaging, the phone tag, the small but somewhat eventful road trip, my fingers would hurt to tell it all. So I'm going to try to shorten it, but it is a story.

It all starts with a Hockey jersey.

Soon after Marcus Foligno started playing for the Sabres, people were putting stuff out there for sale. One of those items that showed up on FeeBay was his Game-Worn 2010-11 Black Alternate Sudbury Wolves jersey. At the time I didn't have that kind of disposable income, so I had to watch it sell to someone else and wave goodbye through my laptop screen.

Fast forward several years and Foligno gets traded to Minnesota.

The current owner decides to try selling the jersey on FeeBay. I again, don't have the available cash. It gets listed, and doesn't sell. They list again. No sale. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. It disappears for a while, then is listed again. This goes on pretty much until this past week.

It shows up again on "The Bay" (not the cool one in Canada), and THIS TIME, thanks to a few bonuses at work, along with a tax return I didn't foolishly spend since the card stores were all closed,
I DO have spendable cash!!

Of course, THIS TIME, There is another bidder! REALLY?? I knew there had to be at least one other buyer, because someone beat me a while back to a B.I.N for a pair of gloves that were Gamers, but come on! THIS IS MY WHITE WHALE!

So the listing ended July 2nd at 1AM, and I stayed up just to BE SURE I would be the winning bidder. In the end.... I was victorious! I paid IMMEDIATELY and more than I should have had to since it didn't sell before at almost $100 less, but it was MINE MINE MINE ALL MINE!!

So, it's now after 1 in the morning, and I dive into bed, content that I have speared my personal MOBY DICK.

So about 3:30 AM, my phone dings the EBAY ding (you know that ding). I see a message from the seller. I'm thinking "Oh no, there's a problem."

I open the message and it reads :
"Hi Jeff . I also will be listing his rookie jersey from 2006 and his Captain’s white jersey from the same set of the black jersey you just won with the team loa if interested I would sell it to you before I list it . Please let me know . Thank you "

:jawdrop:

4AM, I'm messaging this guy back in the affirmative, feeling my personal "You had me at hello" moment.

So alot of messaging and phone tag later, which is really another story in itself, I made an agreement to drive out to meet him about 40 minutes away at where he works for a nice cash deal.

a shortened long story later, here are the results:

First, what started it all:

Lastly, this jersey is trashed in person, puck marks, ans serious "pilling" in spots:

So here is the current display:

Also included in the display is his Sabres Gamer from the NHL Centennial Season, with sleeve patch and COA from Sabres and NHL Auctions, and a "BuffaSlug" Jersey I had mocked up to look like the draft day jerseys and signed by Marcus at a signing!

I'll be living on ramen noodles and the kindness of others for a while but the good vibes I feel from this right now is worth it!

That is the haul of a lifetime!!! Congratulations on finally landing the black one and adding a couple other amazing sweaters as well! Fittingly, creasecollector and I just released the newest episode of our podcast (Center Ice Card Cast) and it’s about white whales! I even talked about a jersey I acquired after years of searching as well. The irony!

Those are some sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet Marcus jerseys. That's awesome you were able to get both of them instead of just one. Same thing happened to me with Stempniak's Peoria AHL jerseys, I almost didn't buy both of them but it's one of the better decisions I've made.

Great display too!

Thanks for the replies, I keep walking past the room and looking thru the door. Still a little in awe that it all happened at once like this.

Amazing story! Thanks for the read!

As a long time Sudbury Wolves fan, having watched both Marcus and Nick play numerous times, those jerseys really bring me back! Just awesome set up you have to display them.

Glad those jerseys found a home where they will truly be cherished, that's what collecting is all about!

Wow, that is amazing, being from Sudbury myself lol.. I actually watched these guys playing hockey and their dad as a coach of the team for a while.

THIS. While speaking to the original owner, he was sure to tell me he "didn't need to sell anything" he was just trying to downsize his collection a bit.

We spoke about Mike Foligno, and how I watched him growing up which was one of the reasons I began to pick up cards of Marcus. He told me about meeting Mike, Nick and Marcus several times. I mentioned about meeting Marcus at a signing many years ago, and having the chance to see a game with Marcus Vs. Nick, which I got to see from a box that also included Jack Eichel's parents. (Absolute sweethearts btw) I told him about the Centennial Jersey I already had, and how I was going to display these "IN 3D' , not in a frame or stuck in a drawer or closet.

In the end I felt like this became less a business deal, and more a collector to collector interaction. He told me keep in touch, and he might hit me up when he thinks to part with other items he mentioned (not Marcus but still really nice items).

In some weird way, I almost felt like the time we spent talking was almost a "feeling out" to see if I was worthy. I'm OK with that.

I can't wait for collector events to start happening again, I'm going to be showing off pictures and telling my story like a proud Papa..
