I have been looking at purchasing graded rookies of my main PC players ,I notice that there are a few different companies grading cards , is there one preticular company that is more preferred or respected by HI members ? If Im going to spend the money, I would appreciate all your advice and opinion...tks guys and gals....

I'd go BGS for anything modern. PSA for vintage.

Seems to be the common approach, although BVG (the Beckett vintage) is pretty good too.

any grading company that mentions the word "gem" in their name = avoid

BGS/PSA are great, SGC/KSA are also good I believe. I haven't had much to do with grading for a while now so I could be off :)

This topic comes up from time to time on the Board, so a search could find another thread that will provide your answer. Regardless, here's some thoughts that might help you out.

BGS is the most respected of the bunch and they also seem to grade the toughest. So expect to pay more for a high grade BGS rookie. For example, my friends that regularly grade their cards to resell them, will try BGS first for a card that looks in great condition. If it doesn't get a 9.5 grade (let's say it grades at 9.0), they'll usually take the card out of the plastic case and submit the card to PSA, because they often get a PSA 10 (highest PSA grade) back from PSA. A PSA grade 10 card will typically sell for more than a BGS 9.0 card, although like anything, there are exceptions.

Keep in mind that a graded card doesn't necessarily mean that you're getting a card that's not been tampered with. I've heard of examples where cards have been repatched (the original patch removed and a better color/design patch substituted) or cards that have been laser cut to remove edge flaws (so the end result is a smaller card) that have been graded high by BGS or other card grading companies. For many, cards that have been altered have "zero" value. Most of the time graded cards should be OK but you must recognize that unscrupulous sellers are out there and a graded card isn't a 100% guarantee of the card being AOK. If you're buying a really high end and expensive graded RC, you may think about dealing with a reputable seller and asking him about the card history before cementing the deal.

Good luck with your search!

I have all my vintage Rookies graded by PSA. They are my choice for vintage and I don't even search eBay for BGS graded cards.

My saved search on eBay is: psa +(rc,rookie) -dna

The -dna is to ensure my search isn't filled with autographed cards that are certified by PSA; their "DNA" service.

For modern cards, I generally do not collect them graded. The only excpetion is that I do collect SP Authentic PSA10 rookie cards of Canadian players. Even though in general the hobby prefers BGS for modern day cards, I don't. I'm a stickler for uniformity and the PSA SPA rookies go well with my vintage graded PSA collection.

I do agree that in general, the hobby prefers PSA for vintage and BGS for modern. Some people prefer SGC for vintage, but from what I see, they are a distant second to PSA.

Also, in terms of preference, you should at least hold a graded card in hand from each of PSA, BGS and SGC because each of them has a different holder and you may prefer one over the other and that may influence your decision of which way to go.

Hope this helps.

I don't buy graded cards unless they are vintage (pre-1962). My own preference is PSA first, then SGC, then BVG/BGS. I stay away from KSA, their grading was horrible for a long time and whatever their grade is, you can pretty much assure it would grade 1-2 numbers lower from PSA, SGC, or BVG. Good luck in your hunt.

I have owned hundreds of BGS , GAI, SGC, and PSA Graded cards. The one thing that stood out to me the most was the cases. BGS cases are tank proof and look the best to me. I found the cards I had graded from PSA moved around quite easily in the cases.

It was mentioned once in this thread already but stay away from Gem10! Years back I bought a Gem10 mario Lemieux rookie off ebay. When I got it it had a missing top left corner and was shaved at an angle down the left side . What a noob I was hahaha :owned:

I am a BGS guy,,, i just like the look of their holders and they are OK at grading I guess. I have had a few beefs with them and their grades but I don't go out of my way to own a 9.5 card anyway. Graded Cards are just eye pleasing but some good once touch holders will do the job just as well if you don't care about a grade.

I used to go with KSA, They grade very good( I have found that they are usually maybe .5 higher than BGS), they just don't get a lot of respect. The only reason I don't go with them is the look of their holders. My collection has to look good! LOL.

I've owned a PSA 10 YG of James Van Reimsdyk that had a corner that was totally white, which would grade probably an 8 at BGS.

But for vintage, PSA is the way to go.
