I imagine this was pretty common...

I was talking to my dad the other day about comics. I remembered a long time ago he had mentioned that when he joined the Navy my grandmother threw out all his baseball cards (all Yankees team sets from 1958-1965 plus lots of others ).

However he mentioned that my grandmother threw out all his old comics, too. Fearing what he would say, I asked him if he remembered any of the stuff he had.

He said he and his friends traded around a lot, but he remembered having the following in a big box:

-the first several years of Spidey, though he couldn't remember if he ever had (or read) AF#15
-while he didn't have the first one (#150), he did have most the first 30 or so Silver Age Flash
-he had "a few dozen" Avengers, starting roughly with issue 6 or 7
-he had "almost all of The Hulk's first twenty issues"
-he had definitely the first Daredevil, probably the next several after that

He said he had a lot more, but those were the main ones he remembered. He also mentioned he was never a fan of Batman, and neither he nor any of his friends really liked Fantastic Four or X-Men all that much. :)

For some reason I never really thought about it until I talked to him, but it must have been a great time to be a 13-year old comic lover in the early 60s--curses on you, grandma!

I don't collect comics any more, but when I go into shops and I look at the high dollar comics on the walls, I cringe. I started collecting/reading comics in 1979 at the age of four and went right through to 1989 (I even bought older issues from flea markets as a kid).

I once read where thinking about saving these comics (and cards) from back in the day was like saving grocery bags. It didn't make a lot of sense. When I was a kid, I kept all of my comics in stacks under my bed and when I hit a certain age, I became "too old" for them and my mom tossed them out. Same with my hockey cards. Still, it doesn't help the sting any when you see a $1,000 price tag on the Incredible Hulk #181 when I bought that same comic for $3 back in '80.

Yep, I think because my dad's stuff was thrown out, he knew better than to trash my things when I moved off to college. Not that my Transformers #1 is anywhere close to the things he had!

I still have a small stack of maybe 75 comics that I had as a kid. I have no idea where the rest went. Old (well, to me) GI Joe#23--I remember dropping it in the sink so it's all wrinkled and the cover is torn and brittle. I seriously doubt it could sell for a nickel, but I'll always keep it.

A few years ago my dad told me that he collected cards and comics when he was a kid. Since my dad is now 65 I thought he should have some pretty cool stuff. We went to my grandparents house but she told us that she threw the cards a way. She did still have some of his comics. We went through them only to discover that most of the stuff was gone however there was still a pile of cool old issues of Ironman, FF, Spidey, Flash and some Romance comics (which are surprisingly valuable). Because they were my dads I seem to have a special connection with them and will never trade or sell them.

Dad told me he mainly collected Habs and Bruins. He said he didn't like Howe but he did love Richard, Boom Boom, Harvey, Bobby Hull and Bobby Orr. He also told me that he didn't have any goalies as his younger brother collected those.
