Finally!
They can stop pretending to have hope,
stop pretending to negotiate in good faith, stop pretending they care what the other sides think.

My favourite line.
"Sources told TSN the NHL's Wednesday proposal was to begin play immediately using the NHLPA's Dec. 9 proposal until such time it became clear the proposal was not working, at which time the system would switch over to the NHL's proposal of Feb. 2."

namely,
Bob Goodenow was not quoted as saying "Yeah, we know darn well the proposal wasn't going to bring on change and that's why we made it, it was a PR move, we looked good for like a whole 2 weeks! but to think that they would actually take it under circumstances where when it doesn't work, and we all know it won't, they get to bring in a cap? no no no, we'll have no part in that, we're too stubburn."

yeah, that's what I thought when the PA first put forward their offer. It's disappointing news but at least their talking about finally making a decision on the cancellation of the season. I want some closure one way or another.

hahah @ Chris' quote.
add on a "bob! come back! I have pie! PIE BOB! PIE!!!!!!"

To me, this season's been over since October.
I had a glimmer of hope before they went that ridiculous stretch without talking.
after that I knew that this would come down to one of them losing their jobs, or replacement players.
replacement players will take till january next year, losing their job could happen anytime.
But for this season to really mean anything, it would have had to have started about a month+ ago.

I think it's over, but it would be nice if they kept talking so they could have a season next year. I kind of think that once they cancel the season, they are all going to take their toys and go home for a couple of months, and then wonder why they can't make things work again.

Looks like they have the weekend to get it done:

Hate to say it, but I kinda agree with Hull on the cancellation of the season no matter what. A 30 game season will only cheapen the league and the Cup winner. With only 30 games, that's about 2 games between each team without inter-conference play. Or three games in the division and 1 against the rest of the conference. Heck, with the right hot streak, you could see a Coyotes/Panthers Finals. Is that what we really want? I guess it is for Rangers fans. They usually peak about 20 games into the season before they flop back to the bottom :p

I wouldn't mind seeing a whole league playoffs.
take each conference, throw each team into a hat, pull em out, then play a best of 5 series. exclude say, cup finalists, so calgary and tampa bay from the first round. 7 winners, throw the finalists back in as #1 seed. best of 5 series again, down to 4 aside. start 7 game series. then 2, conference final. best of 7. then cup final, and end it all.
so you'd have,
what, shortest season a team could have 3 games? haha. longest would be 28?
I know it wouldn't work.
But it'd be fun :)

in a galaxy far far away? ;)

Chris, there was an interesting article in the hockey news addressing that type of deal.
I will look online and if I can't find it, might scan it.

Whats cheaper? A season with 28 games or to extend the season one additional month into the spring/summer getting an additional 14 games or so out of the league? That would put the regular season games up to over 40....not bad? Just wondering...

At this point I no longer care. Im really thinking that if the season ever gets underway (ie 05/06) that I wont care one bit. These millionaires can kiss my you know what, Ive had enough of all their attitiudes and complaints. I hope many others follow the same route!

I loved Bettman's proposal with the 4 points. There's no way one of those things WOULDNT happen. Like it or not, it's cap time whenever this mess does get sorted out.

I heard on the FAN this morning that this new proposal and these four points was set up in a way that in effect Goodenow is rejecting his own proposal, kinda weird if you ask me.

That's effectively what it is.
They say 'ok, we'll do the 24% rollback proposal, but, if it doesn't work (defining doesn't work by these 4 points) than we implement our cap proposal'

so goodenow essentially has to turn down his proposal because he knows that one or more of those 4 points will be met no matter what, and a cap will be the result.

it's a no win situation for him.
