If BAP checklist is correct, product features eight first RCs

After having several players whose only RC was in BAP and numbered out of 99 last year, including Brett Carson and Martin Karsums who I had to pick up for PC reasons, I wanted to see if any player had their only RC so far this season in BAP. There are 8 players that fall onto this list if the posted checklist is correct (none of these have yet to appear on eBay as of the creation of this thread).

#206 Drayson Bowman - debut 16Jan, 9 games played
#208 Mikko Lehtonen - debut 05Nov, 1 game played
#209 Dan Sexton - debut 04Dec, 41 games played
#214 Mike Brodeur - debut 19Dec, 3 games played (in goal)
#221 Keaton Ellerby - debut 14Jan, 22 games played
#261 Deryk Engelland - debut 10Nov, 9 games played
#267 Shaun Heshka - debut 07Nov, 8 games played
#296 Chad Johnson - debut 30Dec, 5 games played (in goal)

I'm not sure how much to expect with Lehtonen and Heshka, but I'm hoping that this won't be the only product for the other six. Even if the players are not auto RCs in SP Authentic or Ultimate Collection, I hope that they at least have cards.

I must say I'm most startled by Bowman and Ellerby, who are high on the prospect list for their franchise and made their debuts in mid-January. Ellerby was the 10th overall pick in 2007, so even if he is with the Panthers, he's someone I would expect to see moved to next year's rookie class if Upper Deck is not trying to toss all eligible rookies into the 2009-10 products. As for Bowman, I'd rather the new Hurricane RC be Samson, as he debuted prior to Bowman and I was hoping to see both Bowman and McBain in a lot of sets next year.

Any other hopes or thoughts on these eight players, or concerns about what other players could sneak in with their first RCs among the few remaining 2009-10 UD products?

I can now confirm Engelland and Heshka are correct on the list based on frankiefives' case break, so most if not all of the players listed in the original post should be accurate.

good analysis ryan.. I hate when they do this.. and of course note that they have dropped bryan rodney from the canes now. He looks to have a promising career. He did not appear in Ice, and now he is not in BAP.
 
Well I will need the Brodeur and Johnson for my Goalie RC PC

Last year I had to get the Tordjman as that was his only RC

I think with SPA coming out soon, there won't be as many super short prints this year. I did a quick check of the Preliminary SPA checklist and found Heshka, Engelland. Lehtonen is going to be in Artifacts(Redemptions) so that leaves;
Bowman, Sexton, Brodeur, Ellerby, Johnson.

Last year the single ones were;
Karsums, Carson, Tordjman, Junland, Gordon

Osala(BAP, Cup), Potter(BAP, Artifacts)
Szczechur(BAP, Cup), Mayorov(BAP, Cup)

Just a quick question about BAP rookies.. I have an Ennis redemption from the 08-09 now there is another in the 09-10 set which would be considered his rookie or is it both? I am sure this has been answered before but I do not remember

Thanks for that update. I see Heshka was also an Artifacts Redemption, not that the UD website recognizes it. Here's to hoping that there are changes to the preliminary SP Authentic rookie list before it becomes the official one.

I believe the 08-09 Redemption is considered and XRC so not an official rookie card.

I know. I spent $20 plus shipping on a Tordjman :|

I am hoping they will be a little lower this year. I think last year everyone was looking to get the next Versteeg (thank god I got that one early!)

I think I paid $8 to $15 for a bunch of no-names. I picked up a Versteeg for $20 from a store that didn't know its hockey cards (otherwise I would have had a hard time completing the set of rookies for that year):devil:

I got a Versteeg Cup Auto /199 for $4 dollars plus shipping the summer before his rookie year. I thought about getting his BAP rookie and Players club at that time as well for about $10 :|. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

I think the Versteeg is one of the only times paying for rookies shortly after a release has paid off for me.

Wow, that is a nice ROI on that card.

Then again, I paid an average of $20 for two Paul Stastny YGs when I thought he was going to blow up, now I'll be lucky to get $6.99 for him.

It could be worse. Being a Leafs fan, if I want to get he highend rookies (Bozak, Gustavsson) I have to overpay. It's not so bad if they pan out but recent history has shown the contrary.

Steen, Tellqvist, Stajan, Wellwood, Tlusty, Stralman, Pogge, Schenn (well he didn't bust thus far but for a defensive specialist his cards are not going to get a big return down the road, unless he is a clone of Scott Stevens and captains the team to multiple cups) all have dropped in value (Tlusty the biggest)

Last year I needed Karsums AND Tordjman for my PC. Both played with the Moncton Wildcats... I was able to buy a Tordjman on eBay, but that Karsums was way too expensive for me (damn you Bruins fans!). I finally bought one - at a price I could handle - several months later, on this site.

This year will not be easy... I am chasing all of those:

Giving this thread a bump.

I can confirm that every player on Ryan's original list has appeared in either SP Authentic or Ultimate Collection with one exception -- Mike Brodeur is still an Only-RC in Be A Player.

Does anyone know if any "first-RCs" were released in Ice, SP Authentic, or Ultimate Collection?
