I hate to see all these guys quitting so I thought posting that I'm not quitting might be appropiate. I quit for about 10 years back in the 80's, because of more important things (girls and partying) :rolleyes: but after settling down, got back into it. You guys must remember, this is a hobby and should be at the bottom of your priority list. Family matters ( both financial and quality time) should be first and if collecting interfers with that, you should get out. If I couldn't afford a holiday with my wife and family every year, the hobby money would go towards that. I find that I don't really miss watching hockey all that much this year, probably miss my monthly hockey pool meetings with my friends more. I also find I'd rather collect vintage players more than the spoiled brats of today anyway. I know that Rookie cards drive todays card market, and if thats what you collect, the strike puts a damper on collecting. Glad the RC's don't do it for me.

Just a few thoughts, if anyone else has any, feel free to post.

Totally agree John, nice to hear you are staying also. I'm 38 and have been doing this for a while now and don't see myself giving up on my collection anytime at all. I've put too much into it and it means a lot to me. Family has and always will come first and this is the side enjoyment I have these days.
 
Good to hear!

I am 20, and in university, but I do not see myself giving up this hobby anytime in the near future(it may be one of the few things which keeps me sane during final exam periods). It may be sad, but I find I am buying more than ever at the moment.

Here to hoping those that left will come back when the whole thing blows over!

I think we've all had thoughts of quitting at one time or another. The reasons to quit are all valid, but the reasons to stay are as well. This isn't something you can just quit partially either. It's all or nothing.

That being said, I'm still here, I may slow down, or even stop in the near future, but it won't be because I want to quit.

Funny thing is for the most part I collect rookies because they are unspoiled - sure it takes less then a year for that to change - but still they haven't been totally corrupted. While at the same time, if I see Gretzky trying to sell me another car or DVD player I think I'll burn the next card I pull of him.

The thought of quitting has crossed my mind, but I can't seem to kick the habit. Quitting would not be because of the lockout. In fact, I've seen more hockey this year than I have in most other years. 3 AHL games, a pair of OHL and a couple World Junior games and it's not even February yet. I don't really miss the NHL at all.
 
I know I have completely slowed down on the collecting this year because of the lockout. I'm not quitting because I really like it, although I'm not much into the vintage sets this year( not ITG's fault). Instead of buying new stuff, I have bought a few boxes of the older stuff (01/02 Parkhurst, Memorabilia, etc. No UD as I have had it with them!) I have sold some of my collection on ebay, but have kept a lot of cards that I like, waiting for the new season to start up. Man, I miss the NHL.

Chris, we all know that you won't disappear, you'll have your hand in something. (and I'm not talking about the expo) :D It's nice to know that you can sell off some stuff when you want and buy some of life's sweeter things. (LCD TV)

However, I'm scaling back a little bit!

I'm not quitting either, although I no longer have the same 100% need for most of my player collections. I want to finish my Charpentier one because I think he'll be forced to retire early because of an arthritic condition, but I'm way more flexible about my other lists.

In my case, it's not the lockout that's changed my habits, it's the fact that there's so many extreme shortprints with hefty price tags. I feel like a hobby should be a source of enjoyment, and it's hard to get excited about cards that are only attainable for one, five, or ten fans with deep pockets.

Like one of my favorite eBay sellers who cut off his collecting the year the market ceased to be Topps and OPC alone and now chases only older sets, I'm cutting mine off at H&P and basing my 100% goals on the player checklists up to that point. I still knock off 1/1's and non-card items though. I may have a couple of emeralds to chase, but I just can't justify paying huge money for gold high gloss cards just because they're shiny and numbered of five. I'm left behind in the today's version of the hobby, along, unfortunately with the kids who can't afford the packs.

I'll second that emotion. Or third or whatever. I'm selling some of my good high-end stuff while it's bringing in descent coin on the 'bay, and of course I'm dumping the rooks of the guys who we will never see play again, and the guys who are currently overvalued. But I'm also taking advantage of the slowdown and picking up some stuff for my collection at amazing prices.

I think what lid-ster says about making priorities is bang-on. Take care of family, friends, bills, work, etc, first. Do the collecting with whatever time (and money) you have left over. That way it stays a hobby and never gets to be too much of a burden that you have to give it up for good.
 
Im 17, ive been setting up in shows since I was about 7 with my uncle. I must say that I do have the reasons that John has for quiting, but im here for good. I have been here long enough, and i dont see a point in backing out at the moment. I do miss hockey a bit, but I have been playing every second day anyways so its not taking that big of a toll on me. Although no NHL has changed my collecting habits, I'll be here till the end.

I do not see myself quiting either. But I may be clearing my trade box out. If someone has something I need and they will not sell, just trade, I'll still follow my policy of tracking down what they are looking for so that I can make the trade. I think I may be done breaking boxes as well. I have a few things listed right now on the 'bay, and more heading tomorrow night. Nothin' too big though.

I'm not quitting, but I am refocusing. After I finish the sets I have started I will be done set building. Still chasing high end Lemieux, MA Fleury & vintage goalie pieces.
 
Also mentioning that I am not quitting either! I listed my whole tradelist last night though as I am going to be buying a lot of stuff for my collection and maybe a couple of boxes after to build up a new tradelist. Also put high (but fair) reserves on my high-end tradeables as I'm not going to let them off easy.

So far, only one thing was sold with BIN. Yup, the PSA 9 Lemieux RC is gone. The little "(OC)" under the Mint 9 bothered me. I still got the ungraded Lemieux which is very sharp but also off-centered. I will be going after a BGS one possibly. As for now, I got a little more money to towards some set killers!
 
I surely won't quit!!! In fact I've been more active in the hobby than ever. It's a good time to catch up as I'm a player collector. And otherwise we wouldn't have Sami Kapanen and Kimmo Timonen back here in Finland and I wouldn't have started to collect them again.. :o
