It's a funny market. The $$$ spent has not really changed, just how it is being spent is what we are seeing. Last year it was wax boxes and very few cards out of the show case (at 1/2 BV). This year, box sales have decreased but we have more "by the pack" sales (which is actually better for us) and more stuff out of the show-case.
Our sales here on HI are about the same although when we share what a card sells for on eBay, some buyers like to refer back to Beckett if it is lists for less ... LOL Everyone wants a bargain - who can blame them.
Vintage remains strong - even up a bit.
Most people who enjoy this hobby will do so regardless of how much they can purchase - they still recognize the fun in it.
As for us buying - we are in auto country so we receive 3 or 4 calls a week. I have limited my buying to vintage (Parkies, Topps plus pre-88 OPC) and high-end Mario, Gretzky, Yzerman and Habs stuff. If a bargain walks in the door - I buy it.
