Just wondering if there is some unwriten rule where HI members do not bid on items that another HI member is bidding on.I see a few items that I would like but they already have bids by fellow HI members and I am not sure if it would be the right thing to bid against the person. If I do not win the item than all I have done is drove the price up for that person. What do the rest of you do?
PLMK your thoughts.Thanks,Winston.

If I see something that I KNOW is being bid on by another member, I will often contact them. If what I am willing to pay is way more than what they would (which for me is a rarity) I let them know that and THEY usually back off. Most of us know who collects what. Some people will pay anything to get what they want. Not so much an unwritten rule as a show of respect for another member.

The best policy is to contact the member beforehand... hopefully the two parties can reach some sort of agreement about it.

Some people choose to just outbid you anyway, despite diplomatic efforts, and the best way to handle that is to simply repay them in kind.

It all depends on whether you like the person or not ;). Seriously though...If its merely a common card that appears frequently on ebay then I would not outbid another member since I can just bid on the next one that passes through. However, if its a rare low numbered card then its fair game since you never know when the next one will come by. It is an online auction after all and anyone can bid. I would go on a case to case basis.

All is fair in cards and ebay. If it is a card of a player you collect, or you need for a set, then by all means, bid

I've been outbid on really rare Bergeron cards a few times by HI members (some dont even collect him). But I guess eBay is fair game.

I used to try and stay out of other members way but after others hitting me often I said screw it - don't care who it is, if I want it I will bid.

I have gotten emails from people asking why I bid on certain cards--because its an auction-non hockey of course

anyway, I wouldnt know ebay names

I normally read these days but I will weigh in, the HI and other Board memberships comprise a small but very vocal minority with respect to the Hobby and all that goes with it.

That being said, ebay is open to a much bigger universe than us board members. With all of us being sellers from time to time, we probably wouldn't want to know that some of our items are not being purchased at their highest potential because somebody was worrying about bidding and hurting somebodies ego? I say bid away, if somebody wants the item they will bid it accordingly.

Plus, how many times have others bid on a card for another member knowing they could land it for them and do a deal later? I see that as much more important in being a good/nice member :)

Well said, Jerry... in fact, it could be said agreeing NOT to bid is the opposite of shill bidding to jack auctions up and ultimately acts to artificially limit what the card should bring... hmmm... perhaps the opposite of "shill" is "shwon't?"

Thanks Dave,,,,,The "schwon't" is applicable when ebay bidding is done on the set of Wayne's World. :)

I am one who tends to lay off if I see another person I know bidding on it or if I know it is a player they collect.

Now if it is a super tough card with a limited print run, well, you better bring you stacks of notes because at the Bank of Ballers, we don't take American Excess.:p ;)

To be honest, going absolutely bananas on Forsberg stuff is what got Shawn and I to become friends. He was the ONLY person ever to outbid me on stuff so I had a sort of respect for him (don't respect him at all now that I know him,:p ). It wasn't until almost a year and a half after he stopped collecting him that we got to talking.

So I guess my point is if you want to make friends, bid against them. If you don't care, don't bid? :D

Dude, do whatever you want to do. I try and play nice but hey, if I need it, you're gonna have to come strong or go home.;)

I back off if I see an HI handle as the high bidder.

Thats just me though. If you want to bid go for it... as long as its not against me ;)

I'm fairly new player on eBay, so I don't know that many member ID's there. That being said, most of the time, I honestly do not know if I outbid a member here. But, usually I just put on a max bid win or lose. I won't get too mad if someone outbids me. ;)

Like some others, if I need the card bad enough, ie. cards from the 90's, I really don't care who's bidding, sorry.

For me, I live in a snipers world. For those of you who don't, you really are missing the boat. Snipers are the ones who win cards most often for the best price.

I won't reiterate what some members have already put forth about ebay being an open market, but those of you who are members of these boards and have not yet been convinced of the effectiveness of sniping by the people here just don't seem serious enough about winning their auctions.

Since I don't know the ebayids of even 10% of the members here, your id on an auction is not going to deter me from bidding... and besides, it's your own loss if you didn't bid as high as somebody else did. Just because people self-declare themselves on these boards as the 'biggest' collector of a certain player doesn't make them entitled to every card of that player in the forums. When it comes to ebay, you need to put your money where your mouth is.

How many people have the same IDs? I know I don't - I have different IDs on Beckett, HI, and eBay. I know a lot of people who have different IDs. I wouldn't really know for sure if I was bidding against an avid collector of a specific card/player.
