Hi,

As you may know, I am a collector of Taylor Hall, so every set that comes out I look over the checklist to see what he has for cards in each set. Tonight I noticed that Hall hasn't been in the base set of "UD Overtime" since 16-17 He had an insert in 17-18 and NOTHING in 18-19 and 19-20
I find it a little odd that he would have so few cards over 4 years. Weird.

Anyways, just wanted to throw that out there. Anyone else collect Star players that get overlooked a lot?

David Pastrnak isn't in the 2019-20 Upper Deck base set. He has an Update card in SP Authentic. The other players with Update cards were traded and are shown with their new teams.

I don't know how those things happen, but they do.

The Overtime set seems to be mostly non-upper tier players outside of the rookies. No McDavid or Crosby in that set recently either. I collect Marcus Johansson, and although he's not a high-end player, he's never been in any Overtime set.

Derek

I collect Sebastian Aho/Canes with my son. He seems absent from base cards a lot of times with an insert and parallel only; then OPC Platinum or Allure comes out and we're chasing a zillion parallels from one set.

You look at most sets and the teams are somewhere between 5-10 players. From a team that regularly plays 15-20 rotating players, it isn’t uncommon to drop a few players from the list. You usually want top scorer, top point producer, up & coming young star, and maybe a top d-man as your base group of cards. Toss in your top goalie, and you basically have 5 players.

It isn’t hard to see who would make the cut or not. There might be separate deals for certain players, like Ovy, to only appear in a certain amount of base products. Where a special insert would be a part of another deal for mem cards and autos, where a count is needed, but isn’t set specific.

All speculation, but interesting topic.

Here is a question: Mike Weaver played in the NHL for almost 15 years, ending his career in Florida. I think Gomaz has one of those 1/1 patches of his, a beauty of a piece, but the player, not a “great player” by any standards, but a solid d-man, stay at home type, with decent +/-, and a few pts each year. How many cards of his are out there? I can almost say that he may have appeared in less than 50 sets total in 15 yrs. this is low considering some years you had more than 20 sets. I remember his patch, and maybe the 12-13 score, that is it, and that was near the end of his career.

How many other players are like this that you have seen that have been missing? Taylor Hall’s absence is definitely a mystery with his production in NJ.

Because Overtime is just kind of a bonus set for stores to hand out to customers... I think its a bit of a sticker auto dump for UD so the past few years lesser rookies sticker autos don't go to waste. So you will see a checklist with 2nd and 3rd liners, so their autos can be used as a parallel.
