Hi everyone.

I'm working on an article for WorthPoint on Jason Spezza's retirement and wanted to get a couple comments from the collecting community.

If anyone is interested in participating let me know or leave responses below. Here's what I'm looking to hear about

- When did you start collecting Spezza?

- Did you (or do you) own the 2001-02 phantom Young Gun? Where does this rank on your list of all-time Spezza cards?
--- sidebar if you have the card I'd love to get a pic of it to include in my article.

- What do you consider to be Spezza's most important card?

- Will you continue collecting Spezza now that he is retired?

I'd prefer real name to attribute to quotes, but if you prefer user name only that's totally ok.

Thanks in advance!

Spezza retiring makes me feel old (to match how I look).

I started collecting Spezza in 2000 with his First Choice Hair Cutters card and PC'd him HEAVILY throughout the early 2000s. His dad Rino frequented a shop I went to as a teen in Bloor West Village in Toronto and always ranted about how good his son Jason was. When his cards hit, I was hooked.

That 2001 UD Young Guns RC was mythical towards my PC and I'm happy to say that I owned two copies of it while I PC'd Spezza. Both were purchased in deals at the Expo and I sold the first one in a "blank cheque" deal and the second one went with the rest of my PC when I sold back in 2008. I wish I had kept one. It was the #2 card in my collection behind what I thought was his best card, his Premier RC /99.

(I wish I had a pic but Photobucket ate all of my pics)

I sold all of his cards from my PC but little by little I have been going back and grabbing some of the cards that meant something to me. I have his 2002 Top Draws auto /24, his Premier RC /99 (amazing story behind that, our own Forsberg21 had the EXACT copy I owned as the crown jewel of my PC and I bought it back from him). I will pick up cards as I go, but I'm honestly not hunting for anything.

What a career this kid had. I was hoping he'd play one more with the Leafs as he's the heart and soul of the team. Glad he's staying on with them in whatever capacity, though.

Another one of my PC players retires...we're all getting old lol.

I began collecting Spezza back in like 2012 ish when I first started to get back into the hobby. My love for players from my youth at the time and affinity for 2001-02 + 2002-03 is what drove me to collect Spezza. One thing I loved witnessing over the years aside from his smarts, was his shot. Even though he didn't use it as much as we'd all like, when he put up a slapper, it was a thing of beauty. One thing I also enjoy seeing today is the impact he had on Zibanejad. Specifically the move where they're streaming down the right wing and shoot five hole after a pump fake for a goal. Everything I see Zibby do that, I think of Spezza.

I don't own the majestic 2001-02 Young Guns BUT IF ANYONE HAS ONE AVAILABLE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. To this I still enjoy collecting Spezza, but I've gotten to the point where its just the super rare stuff that is left for me. So again, if there are any low numbered or jersey numbered rookie year cards floating around out there, please keep me in mind =)

For me his most important card is his 2002-03 Super Rookie Patch Auto Gold /15. As we know, UD Premier RPAs are a foundational part of history to the cards we have today. So for Spezza to be a part of that set is awesome.

My 3 most desired cards are all ones that shouldn't exist. 1st obviously being the 2001-02 YG. Second is actually the scrapped 2002-03 Sign of the Times Dual with Gretzky. Has anyone ever seen a back doored copy? If so please let me know and SELL IT TO ME =). Third which some may not know about is the 2002-03 BAP Signature Series Jersey Auto /10 which was at one point a part of the checklist but was obviously never made as Spezza only signed for UD cards and not BAP.

I will always continue to collect Spezza as I have been doing the past 10 years. He's no different than my other players. One day I'd love to own his BAP All-Star Gold 1/1. So that'll keep motivating me to look for his stuff every day.

Speaking of cards that shouldn't exist, I believe a 06-07 Cup Signature patches of his popped up and that shouldn't exist either. His cards have quite the stories behind them.

Extremely late to the party, it's been a while (again) lol.
Thanks for doing this. I didn't know there were people who still cared about Spezza outside Toronto nowadays.

Well, I collected him since his time in Windsor and for another 10 years. I still have many cards of him I like but the card in the attachment is one I pulled myself (not that spectacular but long odds) and it's one of my favorite cards for that reason.

I think I know which card you mean. But I don't think I have that anymore, but I do have the same card from 05/06 which isn't on a checklist either.
