I thought he was having a decent season?

BROSSARD, Que. - Struggling veteran Alex Kovalev has been given some time off by the Montreal Canadiens.

General Manager Bob Gainey said Tuesday he met with Kovalev to tell him he won't be on the team's trip this week for games Wednesday night in Washington and Thursday night in Pittsburgh.

His status for a home game Saturday against Ottawa remains uncertain.

Gainey said Kovalev is not suspended and will still be paid. He said the right-winger appears to be tired and has not been playing well of late.

The Canadiens also sent slumping winger Sergei Kostitsyn to AHL Hamilton and recalled physical forward Gregory Stewart, at the request of coach Guy Carbonneau and his staff.

The moves came a day after Montreal sent a pair of draft picks to Atlanta in exchange for veteran defenceman Mathieu Schneider, who practised with the team Tuesday.

good, about time he got time off, maybe he'll start to perform when he returns. In the meantime I'll be happy with Stewart in the lineup, adds some grit as well as some decent offensive talent.

the guy doesnt care about playing hockey anyway, shows in his play throughout his career, now he gets paid to sit at home .... what a life !!!!

This may well be the last week of Alex Kovalev in a Canadiens uniform. As amazing as he's been at times, he has been enormously frustrating for much of the season and his play would likely result in him not getting a new offer from Gainey after the season anyways.

It will be refreshing to see someone not skate through all 5 guys on the ice and turn over the puck before he gets a shot off.

Fact is he needs to sit back and reflect on why his heart isn't in the right place. Last season Gainey sat him down and told him to fix his act and he had one of his best seasons ever.

This year he spewed a lot of mumbo jumbo about wanting to improve on last season, wanting to stay in Montreal and proving why he should get a new contract with us next summer but he's gone back to his enigmatic ways of 06-07 and previous years

How many millions does someone have to be paid before their "heart" is in it??
Some of these guys need to spend a season digging ditches or waiting tables so they can appreciate their current situations.

Maybe Bob needs the cap space for a big deal ????? maybe Vinny LOL, and if it's a big deal Kovy's salary might have something to do with it

Today Gainey said something about Vinny in his press conference.

He said that in November he and Atlanta had a deal in place for Schnieder but something happened between then and yesterday. Tampa approached Gainey about a trade for Lecavalier (NOT the other way around) around this time which forced Gainey to halt the Schnieder trade. The talks were serious but at the end of the day it didn't materialize and that's why we got Schnieder yesterday and not in November.

Price is also ditching the red pads! Might be just a coincidence, but since he came back from his injury and started using those red pads, he's kinda sucked :p

thank you Jesus, when they sacrificed Gorges stick a while back it resulted in a goal, maybe his ditching those god-awful pads will result in some wins (maybe even a SO or too (I can dream)).

I will probably get burned once again for suggesting this, but kovalev is a bum. He had a resurgence last year, but he had one in his year in Pittsburgh too. Its like he gets bored with his teams. The only other players I have seen show such a disinterest in the game 90% of the year are thornton and samsonov, and anyone over 30 on the 90's rangers teams..... (kovalev included)

This could be a trade opening, but I doubt it, chances are MTL management just got sick of his play. But you know what, sitting him never helped him on his previous teams, it wont help him now. He might just have a lot of family issues to work out, but even still, its a shame to see someone play like that when they have the talent.

He's not a bum at all maybe a mestrating woman LOL but what makes it frustrating as a Habs fan is when he is motivated no one can dangle like him, I bet there is alot of guys in the NHL that wish they had half of his talent
