I have acquired a Lane Hutson True Rookie numbered to his jersey. Just curious about value? Any thoughts? There is only one comp but I think it's a very low outlier. Value your opinions! Thanks, Steve

No idea what these cards would go for. I have thought, for years, that SPGU Rookies were some of the most under-appreciated RCs in the hobby.

I will mention though, that UD re-configured the set this year (and not in a good way, IMO). What you have is not the "True RC". It's the Rainbow parallel.

For years, SPGU numbered the base set to the player's jersey number - but the base cards are now unnumbered, and the made Rainbow parallels that are #ed to the player's jersey number.

It's a cool card IMO, but no idea of value.

That makes sense! If they are not TRUE rookies maybe collectors aren't willing to pay as much? Who knows? Thanks for the info on the rainbow parallel!

The true base are always to the rc numbering, so it will be #/jersey number…like Gretzky will be /99, Crosby /87, Ovy /8. The same for RC. The last card on many are auto’s, usually in a sleeve with an accompanying sticker card of authenticity. I pulled the Joni Ortio when he had his RC. Traded it but it was in plastic.
Some true base are crazy money, some aren’t. Sometimes it is the seller and other times it is the star power.

I have pulled a Valimaki rc true base /9, sold it for $120.

I pulled a Quinn Hughes rc true base /43. Sitting on this one but just checked ebay to if there was for sale…wow!

The Hutson rc true base is roughly about where Makar & Hughes was in their rc year as price goes. Only time will tell with the value as an investment. If he stays solid for the next few years, maybe win a Norris…sky is the limit

Except they changed that this year. Have a look at the checklist:

The base cards are not numbered. It's the Rainbow parallels that are #ed to a player's jersey. What you're saying has been true for over a decade (I think) - but UD changed the configuration for 2024-25.

In no way am I saying that these are not still desirable cards, but they're no longer "true RCs".

The name changed, basically the same but to print base cards like they did in the past. “True” is just a reference to the jersey numbered variant. I don’t know if this was the term that was given or was created by the hobby, but it was the trend in the day started with Titanium and the jersey numbered base rc. “Rainbow” is new term for the same, and the foil.

“True” is a reference to the version that is indicated as the base set version of a card in that product. From 2012-13 through 2023-24, the true rc was numbered to the player’s jersey number. Unfortunately, 30ranfordfan is correct and for 2024-25 the set’s true rc is unnumbered. Cards that are numbered to the player’s jersey number are now considered the “rainbow parallel”. I am the biggest collector of these cards and am not putting together the 2024-25 set (and any other future ones with this configuration) because of this change. Are they still cool cards? Yes, but they are no longer true rookies.

I think you're mistaking.

When people talk about "True RC" - that term applies to any RC, not just this set. For example, a "Young Guns" is a "True RC" - but Silver Foils, Rainbow Foils, Exclusives, High Gloss, Outburst (etc, etc) are not.

The Cup ARPs /249 (or /99 for the rare ones) are the "True RC". The Gold Parallels are not.

The "true" rookie card is the card that was part of the base set. It's the one that would get the 'RC' tag by Beckett.

The term has been heavily used when talking about SPGU over the years (and Titanium, you're right about that!) because the jersey numbered base cards were rare pulls, and the parallels were much easier to find. I think many people listing those cards for sale or trade would add "True" - because they wanted to make sure people realized that it was the rare base card, rather than a parallel (in many other sets, it's much more obvious to someone when they simply look at the photos).

What cards should be called RCs is something that's debatable. I dislike how COMC does it. They tag a true Rookie Card, and all its parallels as RC. However, I think that is how many in the current hobby view them, so maybe it's more appropriate than what this guy (in his mid 40s) thinks. Beckett, as far as I know (have not read one in years) only tags the base cards as RC - which is what I believe to be correct, it was the accepted standard in the hobby for decades (parallels are NOT rookie cards).

So what I'm saying is - up until this year, all the jersey numbered RCs in SPGU would have got an 'RC' tag by Beckett. This year, they do not. The unnumbered based cards have the RC tag. They are the "true rookie card" in 2024-25.
