Pat Quinn, Brent Sutter, Ken Hitchcock, Bob Nicholson, Stan Smyl, Jim Robson….Leaders and legends of the hockey world gathered in Penticton on July 23 to honour Trevor Linden and the other new inductees into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame.
Also scheduled was the presentation of the inaugural PIONEER AWARD. As it turned out, none of the distinguished hockey men had ever heard of Larry Kwong (who was also the first player from the Okanagan to make the NHL).
My video tribute, “Larry Kwong: The Longest Shot,” took the screen (link below). Expecting a leisurely evening of hockey-centric merrymaking, the dinner guests were suddenly plunged into a harrowing world of discrimination – the Canada that Larry Kwong was born into in 1923.
At the end of the video, there was an extra moment of stunned silence, as the hockey crowd absorbed Kwong’s accomplishments. Then the applause erupted, building to a lengthy and heartfelt standing ovation.
Afterward, while the focus shifted to the night’s other honourees, speaker after speaker (e.g., Quinn, Nicholson, Stockwell Day) took the opportunity to pay homage to Larry Kwong. Within seconds of the show's end, Trevor Linden had rushed over to meet and congratulate the night's surprise star.
The common question was: How come we've never heard of this guy?!
Hope you enjoy!
