Verified Trader ,
Greetings all. Hope your summers treated you well. After a week off visiting my family back in Manitoba, it's back to Calgary and back to the grind, so I figured I'd catch you all up on my summer pickups.
The PC continues, albeit at a much slower pace compared to years prior. In fact, if you were judging based on most of July, you almost wouldn't know I collected at all. The entire month brought nothing until the very end. However, it ended with a bang and led into a more productive August as I continued to cherry-pick pieces that pleased the eye and fit the budget. So for anyone who cares, here's what I managed to pick up through the months of July and August...
First, some autos:
15/16 ITG Final Vault Decades 1990s Autographs #ALM Larry Murphy by primetimepawich, on Flickr
I know a lot of you don't like the Vault stuff. For my purposes, the stamps make them "different". In all likelihood, there probably aren't many possible Vault autos I need out there anymore, but when one does come around within a certain price range, like this one, I'll get it.
16/17 Metal Lords of Hockey Pink #LHLM1 Larry Murphy 2/5 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
These Leaf Metal autos have been surprisingly hard to come by within my budgeted price range. But with some help from our own kmitchel Kevin, I have this one incoming.
16/17 Ultimate Hockey Ultimate Signature Memorabilia Copper Spectrum #SMLM1 Larry Murphy 3/20 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
This card had made the rounds on Ebay previously, but I was outbid on it. Then recently, it resurfaced from the same original seller. I don't know if the original sale went sideways or what, but I was happy to get another crack at it. And thanks to another assist from Kevin, this time I made no mistake. Always liked the look of it as a (barely) 3-color, and for $5.50 I'll take that all day.
When ITGU came out in July, it brought with it the same complaints as past Leaf releases - lack of headshots, headshots not matching the GU, overproduction of parallels to create artificial value, etc. Noted. I dislike those same things, but for purposes of my PC, I decided to look past them. ITGU used a Murphy Maple Leafs gamer. As a Hab fan, they're my most hated team, but they were a part of Murphy's career and as such are pretty underrepresented in my PC. A few ITG niche releases in years past - Superlative Leafs, Forever Rivals, etc - featured Murphy Leafs GU, but mostly jersey cards. Patch cards were few and far between in those releases, so I was interested in some good, quality ones to fill that niche in my PC.
A couple solo ones:
2017 In The Game Used Jerseys Patch Blue #GUP26 Larry Murphy 1/3 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
2017 In The Game Used Jerseys Patch Silver #GUP26 Larry Murphy 1/2 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Nothing too fancy there, you say? Well I guess they saved the better ones for the multiplayer cards:
2017 In The Game Used Quad Game Used Patch Bronze #GUP408 Kevin Lowe/Dave Babych/Larry Murphy/Randy Carlyle 4/6 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
2017 In The Game Used Quad Game Used Patch Green #GUP408 Kevin Lowe/Dave Babych/Larry Murphy/Randy Carlyle 1/4 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
2017 In The Game Used Quad Game Used Patch Magenta #GUP408 Kevin Lowe/Dave Babych/Larry Murphy/Randy Carlyle 3/3 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
2017 In The Game Used Quad Game Used Patch Blue #GUP408 Kevin Lowe/Dave Babych/Larry Murphy/Randy Carlyle 2/2 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
2017 In The Game Used Quad Game Used Patch Silver #GUP408 Kevin Lowe/Dave Babych/Larry Murphy/Randy Carlyle 1/1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
I love the detailed leaf patterns on most of those, including the green /4 which I got for less than 1/10th of the original BIN/OBO price when it was pulled and listed at standard auction. I'd like to collect the whole rainbow, so if you come across a nice /5 or the gold 1/1, I'd love to hear from you.
Housley-Murphy-MacInnis triple patches have been a bit harder to come by. I've made some progress to start this month, and I'll share those next time around, but I did get this one to end August:
2017 In The Game Used Triple Game Used Green #GUP308 Phil Housley/Larry Murphy/Al MacInnis 4/5 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Earlier this year, I showed this SP Authentic Sign of the Times Inscribed auto /15 I won on Ebay:
16/17 SP Authentic Sign of the Times Inscribed #SOTTLM Larry Murphy /15 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
I had lost out on 2 copies prior to this, and they all looked the same. Mine was the last one I had seen until last month, when I spotted another on Ebay.ca. Since I already had a PC copy, I normally wouldn't have given this one anything more than a cursory glance, but I noticed something different about it. Whereas the others had his inscription below his name, this one had it above:
16/17 SP Authentic Sign of the Times Inscribed #SOTTLM Larry Murphy /15 (2) by primetimepawich, on Flickr
As I said to our Ranfordfan Sean, it's almost like Larry was trying to decide between branding himself as "Larry Murphy, 4-time Stanley Cup Champ" or "4-time Stanley Cup Champ Larry Murphy" and was testing both out on these cards. I don't know if this one was an anomaly or if he did the same on others, but for now, it's it's odd, it's different, and the OCD collector in me had to have it. For a fraction of the cost of my original copy, I figured it was worth taking the chance on it being unique.
I'm sure many of you have seen this card on the Good Doctor's President's Choice website:
Pittsburgh Dynasty StickRack Larry Murphy 1/1 presidentschoicetradingcards by primetimepawich, on Flickr
While it is not mine, I believe it will be someday. And when that day comes, I believe I have found its perfect companion piece.
I wanted a good, quality stick piece picturing Murphy with the Pittsburgh Penguins. While Dr. Price's card would more than fit the bill there, there exists another product that would as well - 16/17 Lumber Kings with their All-Time Lumber Team 8’s cards featuring Larry with 7 other Penguins greats of the time. I tried for a number of these upon release but was outbid at every turn. Then they went dark for a while until last month when this copy surfaced. I fell in love with the colorful, easily identifiable piece of Koho stick and knew I had to quit beating around the bush, step up and make this copy mine. And with yet more help from Kevin, I did:
16/17 Lumber Kings All-Time Lumber Team 8’s Red #AT09 Mario Lemieux/Ron Francis/Jaromir Jagr/Tom Barrasso/Kevin Stevens/Larry Murphy/Joe Mullen/Paul Coffey 1/3 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
You're all familiar with this card from my signature and numerous posts crowing about it:
16/17 SP Game Used Game Gear NHL Legends #GGLM Larry Murphy 3/3 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Easily one of my favorite pickups of 2017 thus far. I had wanted a Wings tag card for my PC, and this card checked all the boxes. I was willing to overpay for it because with the NHL logo tag, I thought it was the nicest tag card I could ever hope to find. Turns out I was wrong...kind of. In late July, I found its French equivalent doppelganger:
16/17 SP Game Used Game Gear NHL Legends #GGLM Larry Murphy 2/3 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
My first reaction was one of disappointment, as this clearly took away from the uniqueness of my copy. Yes it's an "LNH" logo tag instead of an "NHL" tag, so purists might say I still have the best copy. But you know what I mean - stylistically, they're the same card.
But you know what they say...if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. The price was right, so I had to add this one too. This copy came from Ebay via HI's own cremona71. At least now I can't compare my copy to someone else's. I own them both, so it's an internal contest.
That's it for now. More to come in future. Thanks for the look, and comments always welcomed and appreciated. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have something you think I might be interested in. And I'm selling too, so feel free to check my Flickr site in my signature and let me know if anything catches your eye. If a PC card of mine would help a specific project of yours and you can show how you'd give it a good home, I might just let it go.
Thanks a lot
Joe Pawich
