One of the positive things from a buyer's perspective about the recent skyrocketing prices in the hockey hobby market is that a number of rare or short-printed cards that have sat in collections for decades are finally making their way to auction sites and marketplaces.

HHOF certified autographs are my main jam, but a close second would be Gilbert Perreault autographs, especially those ranging from his first certified autos (Zellers and Future Trends) to the 2006-07 season. The cutoff date of 06/07 is arbitrary - I just happen to love a majority of set designs from Topps, Fleer, ITG, Pacific, UD, etc. from the 90s through this specific season. I think my sweet spot is definitely sets from the 2001 season through the lost full lockout year.

While I wouldn't necessarily consider myself a super collector, since I do not feel a compulsion to acquire all of the different versions of Perreault's cards and only acquire anything post-2007 if I really appreciate the design, I am still proud of the collection I have put together of the player who helped define my favorite franchise for the entirety of his career.

With that said, finding the few cards I am still seeking has been few and far between... until this recent boom. I missed out on my number one white whale late last year - the 2004-05 Legendary Signatures Gilbert Perreault autograph /34 - but thankfully that card at least ended up in the hands of one of our members here. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to scratch a slew of other wants off my list, including the card that was number two on my white whale list.

I still have some things coming through the mail, so I will add them when they arrive, but I just can't wait any longer to share what has come in.

2001-02 BAP Signature Series 500 Goal Scorers Autograph /10

This entered my collection about half a year ago, but at the time it was the most notable addition I was able to make to my Gil collection in some time. Just a clean card with a great late-career picture of Perreault and a hard signed auto. I really miss classic ITG/BAP.

2011-12 Parkhurst Champions Signature Renditions Autograph

This card was never really on my radar, but one showed up at auction for under $20 and I had to pounce on it. Absolutely love the painted style and the gold ink signature really pops. The Perreault comes out of the Group C in the set, which is still set at 1:1,241 odds. Would love to add other players from this set, but *whew* are they expensive.

2009-10 Upper Deck Black Pride of a Nation Dual Autograph

Another card outside of the usual parameters of my wantlist, but the bidding stayed low and I really like the look of it. Unfortunately, Perreault's auto doesn't catch the light quite as well as Clarke's does, but he just seems to have used a more muted pen.

2004-05 UD Legendary Signatures Buybacks Autograph

Trying to make sense of the Legendary Signatures buybacks checklist took way longer than I care to admit. Essentially, the official checklist from Upper Deck has it as a 35 card set. Places like Beckett, amongst others, have it at 195 cards, each one with a unique print run. Turns out UD considers the COA with the buyback hologram as the checklisted card, with 35 different players having at least one buyback card. Players with multiple buyback cards still come with the same COA card. Perreault has 7 buyback cards in the set and I have no desire in tracking all of them down, outside of the autographed Hero Twigs card. This version pictured here is the highest numbered Perreault buyback at /21, a 2001-02 UD Legends Milestones jersey card. I'm just thrilled to have one of the buybacks in my collection.

2001-02 UD SP Game Used Tools of the Game Signed

Now we're talking! My dimly lit abode does not do this card justice. I am a huge sucker for this era of UD memorabilia. Features a well-used piece of a skate, limited numbering, and Perreault's excellent hard-signed signature. Also, another fantastic photo of Gil.

2016-17 Upper Deck Artifacts Honoured Members Signatures

*WHEW LORD* This card is simply gorgeous. This is one of the few more recent cards that I had been keeping an eye out for. Someone on ebay broke up their Honoured Members set about a week ago and the Perreault sold to someone else on an offer of $150 before any of the other signees did. Hard to feel bad about missing out on a card I didn't even get a chance to snag, but I still would have liked a shot at it. Thankfully, one showed up shortly after on Beckett for $85. Grabbed it immediately. Gil doesn't sign much anymore for UD - when he does it is usually for a showstopper like this.

2004-05 Legends Classics Robert and Perreault Dual Autograph
2004-05 Legends Classics Gilbert Perreault Classic Signature

WHITE. WHALE. ACQUIRED. I have been after the Perreault Classics auto for about 16 years now. A relatively new seller on ebay recently uploaded a ridiculous amount of Legends Classics cards - dual autos, regular autos, silver, gold, and spectrum base cards. I almost gave myself whiplash when the Perreault Classic showed up. It is an XSP and the only other evidence I had ever seen of one existing was an old sales entry on worthpoint from over a decade ago. Decided to go all out for the Perreault and figured I should add the Robert/Perreault the seller listed as well. Go figure, both cards were hot and heavy with action, and I will go to my grave keeping secret how high I made my top bid for both cards. Also added gold versions #'d to 25 of each of Perreault's three base cards from the set. Thrilled to finally put this white whale to bed. There's nothing quite as satisfying as getting to finally remove a card from one's "looking for" signature on here!

As I mentioned above, I have some more fun stuff on the way. Funnily enough, one of them is the card I put into my "looking for" signature to replace the Legends Classics Perreault. It showed up on ebay last night for a dreamy price. Already got to delete it and replace it with yet another wanted card. Can't wait to show it off.

Thanks for viewing!

I am drawn to the 2001-02 UD SP Game Used Tools of the Game Signed with the skate piece in it. Skate seems more common these days but I do not think it was often used around that time.

Very cool cards all around though.

What an amazing player! I remember listening to the sabres on the radio and the energy every time the French connection line hit the ice! Perreault was simply magic!

Great cards man, that Honoured Members design is soooooo nice!

This set from Artifacts is so gorgeous, you are so right ! I have Gretzky in Oilers uniform, and it's beautiful.

As a french canadian, from Québec, I always felt Perreault was under appreciated. If he played for a big market, I think his cards would be much higher value wise.

Awesome cards bud.

That 500 Goal Scores is sweet. I traded my Mikita for a couple of nice Howes years ago
Was a win win trade but do miss the Mikita

The Legends Classic is unreal. That set, and era, were when UD was truly great. I miss those days and how the company was seemingly unstoppable.

The Signature Series 500 Goal Scorers is another stellar card, congrats on all of them!

A bunch of the other Tools of the Game cards from this year have cuts of goalie pads and I'm pretty sure ITG was doing pads even earlier. I'm sure someone knows of earlier skate cards than this, but I cannot think of one off the top of my head. The card is surprisingly thick and the wear on the skate is evident. I'm not sure if Perreault has another piece of skate card either. Just a really cool piece of memorabilia.

Perreault definitely had that ability to make the crowd come to their feet every time he revved up the ice. Such a unique skating style too - bow-legged and almost looked lackadaisical. Then he'd blow by the defender. Appreciate the props!

I bet that Gretzky is jaw-droppingly gorgeous!

I agree about the small market limiting his stardom a bit. He would be even more revered if he had starred in one of the Original Six markets.

I appreciate everyone's kind words. I love having a place where we can share our collections and love for the hobby. A little fun thing some of you may not have noticed about the Perreault cards.... he has two different signatures! He styles the "G" in his first name differently - sometimes it's the more common cursive "G" (like on the Legends Classics autos) and sometimes its a print "G" (like on the Honoured Members). As far as I can see, he has always alternated between the two. The print version is definitely much more rare.

Also, one of the fun deliveries I hinted at last night ended up arriving today. Here's a quirky one:

An autographed puck, in original case and with the COA, from 2001-02 Fleer Legacy Hockey. These could be redeemed out of this product, falling one in every other box, and featured a helluva interesting checklist: from Jean Beliveau and Bobby Hull to Dave Schultz and Tony Twist. This item didn't necessarily break the bank, but they're all limited to 150 and are getting harder and harder to find with the original case and with the Fleer "Document of Authentication." Very happy to have this one!

Much appreciation here and I agree with you. UD just seemed so much more innovative back then. I still enjoy opening their products and understand their shift from a market standpoint, but damn did those early 2000's sets feel special and inspired.

I mentioned this in the hard-signed autographed thread, but it is absolutely nuts that we got Legendary Signatures, Legends Classics, and the ITG Franchises autograph sets during the 2004-05 card season.

I really enjoyed re-reading your commentary about these pickups. The BuyBack auto is sweet (some cards were just made to be autographed) and the White Whale story is one I think we can all relate to in some way. Those Classics autographed cards are stunners!

Congrats on all of these sweet additions to your Gilbert Perreault collection!
